What is Simutrans?Simutrans is a freeware transportation simulator that runs under Windows, Linux, and a few other operating systems (Mac with Intel processors, BEOS).
You take on the role of operating a transportation company, and your goal is to get goods of various kinds, as well as passengers and mail, from one place to the next.
Don't be fooled by the tile-based graphics - this is a very complex game, and it is constantly evolving, with new features being added. It is a living game, and consistently being made better and better.

Where can I download Simutrans?Downloads can be found here on the Simutrans forum. You can
go directly to the Download Simutrans board to download the latest version.
NOTE: Most users keep pretty much up to date with the latest version. This is generally the recommended behaviour. Since development is constant, however, the latest version might have serious problems. Usually, these are corrected quickly (with another release). If you are concerned, you may want to wait a week or so after a version is released and check the
Bug Reports board to see if there are any major bugs reported; if not, download and enjoy! (If you need help, please see the
Help Requests board.
What Simutrans communities exist? This forum is, with the exception of the official
German Simutrans forum, the primary Simutrans home on the Internet. This is for historical reasons that you can read about elsewhere. Aside from the official German forum, there is the official
Japanese Simutrans forum. Except for those two, this forum exists as the International Simutrans Forum, and strives to provide a home for all languages besides German and Japanese.
Note: We view the community as collaborative, not competitive. This is not the first English Simutrans forum; but when I took over the hosting (and the "old" forum went away, and this, the "new" forum became just "the English-language forum"), I expanded it to include any language that didn't already have a home, e.g. Japanese and German. But, again, we're a global community; it's just hard to communicate between languages, except for wonder multilingual fans.
What Simutrans resources (i.e. websites) exist?NOTE: Previously there were links to the language boards on this forum, but with the change of simutrans.com pointing to the forum, this will somewhat change. However, let me encourage you to scroll down on the home page of the forum to find the various supported languages. If your language isn't there, stick around - we're always looking to expand the supported languages!
NOTE: Many of the resources below (the Guides, SimuSetup, SimuConfig, etc) are created by fans. As with all things Simutrans-related, anything not released by the development team (the newest versions of the Simutrans engine/executable, and generally Pak64, which is the assumed and official Simutrans graphics set) may not be kept up to date with the latest version. The entire community is made up of volunteers; folks making these programs can't add the latest version until it is released, and even then, everyone has a 'real' life - updates are never immediate. But often, they are kept pretty well up-to-date. But you should make sure that they support the particular version of Simutrans you have downloaded.
http://wiki.simutrans.com/ - the official Simutrans wiki, supporting English and German at this time.
http://guide.simutrans.com/ - a great pair of guides, written and updated by Ormac. These are great for a new player to start with, to help understand how Simutrans works.
http://setup.simutrans.com/ - a great program, written and updated by robofish. This awesome little program will download and install Simutrans for you, with certain options available. (Note: Installing Simutrans is easy - just download a "base" pak and executable; extract them to the same directory, and go -- but sometimes this proves difficult for new players. SimuSetup can help those players get going -- and frankly, even though I'm an experienced player, I have used this program, and I heartily recommend it)
http://config.simutrans.com/ - a great program designed to help you customize Simutrans. There are a few configuration files (simuconf.tab being the main one) that can radically alter your game; this software (SimuConfig) gives you a graphical interface to configure nearly all settings from the various configuration files. Truly a masterpiece!
http://simustarter.simutrans-tips.com/ - a great program that helps you start Simutrans with certain options you might want (for example, no sound; or 'freeplay' mode).
http://addons.simutrans.com/ - a repository of addons, primarily for the main official pak (Pak64), but also for the most popular add-on pak (Pak128). Also includes some of the smaller and less common paks. (For new players: Please excuse the terminology - "pak" can mean multiple things, unfortunately. It can refer to an entire graphics set (which is what is run by the simutrans engine/executable - what you interact with), or it can refer to a specific file that contains one or more objects (vehicles/buildings/other parts of the game like landscape tiles); there are some subtle additional possible meanings, but those are the main two. So unfortunately, a Pak (i.e. graphics set) is itself made up of one or more paks (i.e. the files that all the objects in a graphics set). So again, a "pak" might refer to an entire stand-alone set of objects you can play with, or it might refer to a collection of objects (or single object, even) to be added to (most commonly) Pak64 or Pak128, or it might refer to the actual ".pak" file itself. Sorry! But we can't change it now, it's too late.)
http://maps.simutrans.com/ - a repository of maps (heighmaps) that you can use to get some real-world terrain to play on.
http://translator.simutrans.com/ - the official site for Simutrans translations. This makes it easier to keep the various supported languages up to date.
Some Subdomains on Simutrans.comhttp://screenshots.simutrans.com/ - Screenshot site (not updated nearly enough)
http://raven.simutrans.com/ - Lots of cool stuff
http://abo.simutrans.com/ - home of PakAbo, which is a fully playable pak.
http://japanese.pak.simutrans.com/ - home of PakJapanese, another fully playable pak.
More WebsitesThis list is somewhat historical, and has generally been somewhat out of date. Unfortunately, people create websites, and let them languish. However, many of these sites *are* kept up to date, and are valuable resources.
