Would it be possible to put a routing penalty on a rails (maybe even road) so the trains are less likely to take that route but a (slightly) longer route?

I know i could use way points but this solution would be more efficient and leaves the trains to find other/faster routes if they come availible

This would have to be some sort of signal, I guess. But what sort of signal would signal to the player that this is what it does? (Not that most signals are particularly intuitive as it is.)

You can use a small bridge for this purpose. It looks weird, but it works. (i.e. add a small slope to the route to add to its penalty value)
Life is like a Simutrans transformer:

You only get one of them, and you can't have it on a slope.

i think a sign as big as is used for one way should do the trick. Maybe use some black and white. :)

@Spacethingy i have multiple extra hills and 1 tunnel in that route and that doesn't help.

How does an unnecessary bridge help on your track for high-speed trains? ;)
