The 1000th year of my continent

I'm sorry that my English is not good  as I am a H.K. player
I love playing simutrans very much and I praise the one who created this game.

I started playing my first save game in pak128 since August,2010.
Until now, April of 2013.This is the 1000th year of my game.
It was a 500x500 map from the year of 1 - 900.
The population in the map is about 8.5 million in 37 cities.
More than 99% of the populated areas are covered by public transport network.
The main types of public transport are Trains,buses and ferries.

1. History of Cities

a) The earliest cities

I started playing with the towns located at the bottom left hand corner--Wells,Norwich,Liverpool and Cantebury
In the very early years (1-200), messy trains and buses with NO SCHEDULES are running between these few cities.
Trains are 5-station tiles long using "CKD 749 locomotives" and 9 passenger coaches,
the capacity was 702 having a max speed of 100km/h.
More cities had started their development (Lancaster/Ely/Winchester/Truro/Bradford/Wakefield)
Later, it was found that these trains were too slow and not spacious.
"Evil BR 153/155" diesel trains (with 120km/h and capacity of ~1000)  were introduced to replace the old once.
The transport network is very poor. Passengers always need to wait for long to get on buses and trains.
Sticking  of trains are extremely serious.(Actually I didn't know how to use appropriate signals at that time..=_=)
As it was a long time ago...I had only few screenshots for that....

b) The fast-developing era

From the 200th - 500th year. All the 37 towns are developed to small scale cities.
Housing Estates were introduced to the map.The first housing Estate is "Da Nang Estate" in Liverpool.

Intercity Train network called CCR was organized (Will discuss later)
All old tracks are upgraded and electrified. The trains are also upgraded to 8-station tiles long having a speed of 120km/h.
The capacity of trains increased greatly to 2200-2600 passengers.

At the same time. UGR train network (Will discuss later) were built to reorganize intra-city trains.
Organized Bus lines were run systematically to provide service to every part of the city to CCR or UGR stations.

Population : 1.8 million
Trips per year : 6.1 million
No. of vehicles : 280 (Internal ID calculation)

Cities developed : 37
Population : 3.4 million
Trips per year : 12.6 million
No. of vehicles : 883 (Internal ID calculation)

c) Urbanization of the whole continent

From the 500th - 950th year. The urbanization of the 37 small cities keep going steadily.
The growth of Bus Services was the most rapid one. Increase of population density brought challenges to the whole network.
Overcrowding on roads and even on tracks were commonly found, traffic jams on roads also cause lots of inconvenience to commuters.
As the number of coaches couldn't be increased, a new signal system was applied to the CCR network to accommodate more trains.

More UGR and CCR lines were opened and Ferries were used to assist train lines.
Until the year of 950,the network could be said to be completed and some cities stopped developing.

d) The age of a 1000x1000 map

From the 950th year, I enlarged the map to 1000x1000.
The new land have a lower density of cities unlike the "old land".
Still a long way to go for me...

2. Development of Intercity Railway Network

a) The origination of CCR (Cross Country Railway)
Starting from the 200th year, messy railway lines are reorganised into systematic train routes.
The fallowing route map is recorded in the year of 302.All of the routes are using 16-carriage electric trains.

Frequency of routes are adjusted to carry at least an average of 30% passengers.

Line 1 : the earliest route,across early developed towns with a population of 450,000.(5 trains per month)
Line 2 : the second route in my map, connecting the new towns with a population of 250,000.(6 trains per month)
Line 3 : The longest line at that time.(5 trains per month)
Line 4 : The only line connected to the biggest city,London.(8 trains per month)
Line 5 : Express train seving passengers between Birmingham and Ely/Norwich.(5 trains per month)
Line 6 : An important route connected to the towns on High land.(8 trains per month)
Line 7 : A short route which would be extended in the future.(5 trains per month)
Line 8 : A short route which would be extended in the future.(4 trains per month)

b) New Network under fast construction
The fallowing route map is recorded in the year of 477.
A new kind of route was introduced, running several stations in a town and conect to the nearing towns.
This knid of minor routes were to assist major routes.Minor routes were run by 10-carriage electric trains.
Lots of routes are extended and some of the frequency increased.

Line 1: Extended to kingston-upon-hull. (5 trains per month)
Line 2: Became a less important route as more routes were organised.(5 trains per month)
Line 3: From Norwich to Swansea, it cannot reach London.(5 trains per month)
Line 12: From Kingston to London, almost the same route with line 3. (10 trains per month)
Line 4: (7 trains per month)
Line 5: Extended to Carlisle. (5 trains per month)
Line 6: The overloading problem started to become serious . (8 trains per month)
Line 7: Extended to Edinburgh.An important route connecting the East and the West.(10 trains per month)
Line 16: Same route as line 7 but can't reach Edinburgh but Leicester in the east.Assisting line7.(2 trains per month)
Line 8: Extended to Edinburgh.(4 trains per month)
Line 9/10: A pair of Minor and Major route.The Minor route had Ely as the terminus.
Line 11&13: Two new lines connecting the newest cities to the old network
Line 14: Became to longest line in game. A huge projeect to build tracks through Leeds North Plain.(6 trains per month)

c) Overcrowwding of CCR system
From the year of 477 to 725. The population in the map has increased from 3 Million to 6 Million.
The number of train routes increased only a few. Not much tracks could be built.
Some tracks were overloaded seriously.So decrease the efficiency of trains.
Many passengers accumulated in main Stations.
The network became badly organised.Overlapping of routes caused uneven distribution of passengers.
The fallowing route map is recorded in the year of 725.

Some of the Routes had more than 15 trains departed each month.
Espacially for line 7. 7s/7p/16 were special routes to assist line 7.
Trains of line 7 always full only for two stations (Truro/Wakefield)
7s was the route from Truro-Leicester
7p was the route from Bristol-Edinburgh (Skip Dundee-Leicester)
16 was the minor line from Lichfield-Leicester

d) The reorganisation of CCR routes.
In the year of 900. A huge project was conducted to reorganise tracks, stations and routes.
It was very challenging to me -__-.As I found more than 500,000 passengers in some stations....
The fallowing route map is recorded in the year of 950.

I decreased the number of routes but increased the frequency a lot.
After my testing on abilities of tracks.The track can accommodate 32 trains per month.
If all trains are the same type, it can accommodate 40 trains per month.
If the number of trains were more than 30 trains per month.There would be delay of trains.
For now,CCR trains were very busy....
Line 1: 20 trains per month
Line 2: 34 trains per month
Line 3: 30 trains per month
Line 4: 28 trains per month
Line 4(to LDN East): 20 trains per month
Line 5: 26 trains per month
Line 6: 25 trains per month
Line 7: 32 trains per month
Line 8: 39 trains per month
Line 9: 20 trains per month
Line 10: 11 trains per month

I am now planning to introduce trains with capacity of 2700 to my routes....

3. Development of bus routes
My map is having more than 300 bus routes.
I am proud of my bus routes as I put a lot of effort on it....

a) Role of buses
I started to organise scheduled bus routes from the year of 398.
In my map, buses are used to transport passengers to the citys' main stations.
Buses couldn't be used to load passengers to other different towns because the demand was too high to use buses.
Therefore, trains are a kind of intercity transport and buses are only a kind of intracity public transport.
Each City CCR station was built with a big bus terminal.
The first bus route was line 1 (wells station - wells south station)
It was cancelled already because of the overlapping of the new underground line.
To be honest, I put most of my time on developing bus services.

b) HK style Double-Deckers
My bus routes are run by HK buses, most of them are double deckers.
They can carry quite a large amount of passengers and can run quite fast....
There are more than 4000 double-deckers running in my map.

c) Numbering system of bus routes
In early years of bus services, route number is arranged according to the date it start to run.
Later, I found it was troublesome to find the route.So, I arranged a set of route number for each city.
For example,
Wells (1-10)
Liverpool (11-20)
Cantebury (21-30)
Leeds (241-245)
London (246-260)
Darlington (261-265)

You may see some route numbers are followed by an alphabet.
If routes (always two) are organized together having the same destinations via different stops.
Their route number will be the same but followed by an alphabet of A and B respectively.
Other  routes similar to them will we followed by C /D / E.....

d) Types of bus routes
1. Major Station <--> town (most common)
2. Minor Station <--> town
3. town <--> Nearing town
4. Minor Station <--> Minor Station
5. Sets of routes in Interchanging scheme (least common)
The interchanging scheme is the exceptional case of intracity role of buses
In some parts of a city, railway stations are not close to the region.
Some bus routes can carry those passengers to the other towns conveniently.
Passengers can interchange different bus routes to their destination.

4. Intracity Railway
a) Underground Railway (UGR)
UGR  system serve passengers to major CCR stations.
Only mature cities are having this system.
It was run by 6-coaches trains having a capacity of 700-900
There are now 40 UGR lines.Each line having 7-16 stations

b) City Trams
It is not a good idea for me to use tram/Light Railway for city with high population density.
The tram tracks in old London City were pulled down....

600 years later, City Trams appeared again in a small city-- Southampton
Although it was not as efficiency as bus, it looks more environmentally friendly...-__-"

Some years later, Trams were introduced to an island--Darlington
But it was still not too nice for me...

5. Ferries
There were a few ferries serving two island (Southampton and Darlington)
 to two destinations on the mainland (London and Manchester)
