Title: Milk
Post by: jamespetts on August 26, 2013, 05:35:37 PM
There is much to be said, I think, for simulating the change in the way in which milk was transported beginning in around the 1920s. Before then, milk had been carried in churns in milk vans on railways (or, for short journeys, in churns on horse carriages). Starting from about the 1920s, but not completed until about perhaps the 1960s, milk was carried in container wagons on railways and in road tankers.

To implement this, we would need:

(1) a new category of goods - "liquid foods" (I believe that some other paksets already have this);
(2) a new type of goods to represent unchurned milk - perhaps the new type could be called just "milk" and the old type "milk churns";
(3) industries dealing in milk (farms and dairies) from the 1920s onwards to produce and consume the new non-churn milk; and
(4) a series of road and rail vehicles (and possibly holds for sea-going vessels) designed to hold "liquid foods", based on milk tank wagons/milk lorries.

I could go ahead and implement this just in Experimental, but I think that it would be better if this were synchronised if possible, and there is no reason in principle not to do this in Standard, especially since Standard might well get a feature allowing automatic closure of industries.

I should be interested in people's views on this topic.

I toyed with this idea when I first did all the industries and goods but I decided on the current implementation because (a) it's simpler for people to understand and avoids confusion and (b) you would have to draw a lot of extra vehicles for the new goods type, which is a lot of work I wasn't prepared to do. I suspect these reasons are both still good enough to keep things as they are...

I see.

One other milk related enhancement on which I am working, which should fit into the existing implementation in both Standard and Experimental without too much difficulty, is the development of earlier (1860s and later) passenger rated milk and piece goods vans in passenger liveries. We already have fitted goods vans from the mid 1880s (6 wheeled vehicles), but fast freight had been carried on railways for at least 25 years before that (and possibly even as early as the 1850s, although I do not have any clear information on that - if anyone does, I should be most interested to know).
