Factory timeline discussion (Filling gaps)
« on: October 22, 2012, 08:24:59 PM »

This is the original pak96comic timeline, including all the factories. I recommend you download the latest translations from simutranslator since I made some, so you can understand better which factory I'm talking about.

Right now I'm not really interested in adding chains or products, but in filling the gaps and extending the available ones through the years.

Right now I think we must fill from 1800 to 2100, or at least to our actual year. This thread will discuss the factories, when they get ready we'll discuss the vehicles for those goods in the same interval.

The thread may look a little disconnected if you read it in parts, so it's better to read it all. That's because it took me some some days to write and I've did it without order.

Let's begin with Solar Plant
It's all right, I just think we can add a new style starting from 2005 and on.

The style is a Solar Thermal Storage Power Plant. A pic to help.

Coal Power Plant
We can start that the actual coal plant is a nuclear one.

So my suggestion is create one coal plant to start in 1880 and finish in 1950. Another style for 1940 to 2000. And a modern plant to go from 2000 and beyond.

From this source I found that electricity from coal started in 1880, if anyone can show it's wrong I would appreciate if you post here. Maybe it started earlier but I guess the site is telling in 1880 it started to get big.

Supermarket
We need a Supermarket with a 40s/50s style, so we can change the existent one to start from 1980. Maybe we can add rouge to the consumables.

Department Store
Here I suggest ending the 75 version in 2000 and create a modern looking one. I think we should replace Hygiene Products with Rouge. More info below in Shops.

Shops
The dates for the local market look ok. For the italian market it should be 1400-1600, because it looks more from Renaissance, but we can duplicate it in 1800 to 1900 because of the Revivalism. We need at least 3 new styles, a modern market for 1980 and on, a medium style for 1900-1980 concurrent with the local market but for the other climates, and another style for 1800 to 1900 concurrent with the italian market for the other climates too.

Now a discussion about what should be consumed in the shops/supermarkets/department stores:
I think that shops should have: Soft drinks, Produce, Juice, Olives, Cosmetics, Rouge, Hygiene products, Electronics just for the shops from 1910 and on
Department Stores should sell: Soft Drinks, Produce, Juice, Olives, Cosmetics, Rouge, Electronics
And Supermarkets should sell: Soft Drinks, Produce, Juice, Olives, Cosmetics, Rouge, Electronics, Hygiene Products

Oil Refinery
Refineries started around 1880 creating Kerosene, gasoline came right after. So a good starting date is 1890. The two available refineries start in 1920, so my suggestion is change them to 1945 and create a new one between 1890 to 1950. Chemicals came later around 1920-40.

Gas Station
I've found that gasoline and gasoline cars started around 1870/1900, so to synchronize with the vehicle parts factory we can make the gas stations start in 1890. The available gas station is modern and I think it can fit from 1975 and beyond. I think it's better to split 2 style between 1890 and 1975, a style to fit between 1940 to 1975, when cars became a bigger project, and another from 1890 to 1940, while vehicle production was starting.

Oil Wells, Pumpjacks & Oil Rigs
We have registers that petroleum was used in 2000BC, but we don't need to go so far, at least not yet. Right now we need to make them from 1890 and so on.
Oil Rigs start from 1960 so the provided one is right. The pumpjack is too modern for 1890, I couldn't find info about when pumpjacks started, but I think we can move its intro date to 1950.
To fill between 1890 to 1955 we need an old style oil well. Pic1 Pic2 Pic3

Sawmill
I think we can move the dates for the existent one to 1800-1950. A version for 1950-present is needed.

Vehicle Parts Factory
Here we need a factory with an older style to start in 1890 until 1970, the (brown) Vehicle Parts Factory can start from 1970 to 2030 and the (Grey) Vehicle Parts Factory can start from 1987 to 2100. A modern version can be painted to start from 2000 and beyond.

Bakery
The european bakery have intro in 1850, while the tropical is 1650. The idea is change the european to 1800-1930, add a 1930-1990 version and another for 1990. The tropical should end in 1800 and two new tropical versions must be painted, one for 1800-1890 and another for 1890-1945.

Olive Tree
Here I think we can make the starting year to 1.

Workshop
The two available workshops are perfect, we just need to fill the gap between 1890 to 1968/71. I think we can have 4 more types:
2 from 1890 to 1945. One designed for a tropical look and other to a european look. Both really small, 1 or 2 tiles.
And 2 from 1945 to 1975. No specific looks, and just slightly bigger, 2 to 4 tiles.

Grain Mill
Modern mill should have intro year in 1970 and the other mill should be in 1950 to 1980. Both versions are limited in some climates, so a versions for the other ones is needed. We then need one or two 1800-1950 versions.

Iron Mine
We need two new versions, a smaller and older version, to start from 1890 to 1940. And a secondary version, from 1935 to 1985. The existent one will just change the intro year to 1980.

Coal Mine
Needs changes on dates, start in 1890 to 1960. We then need a new version for 1960 and beyond, bigger and more automated.

Sand Pit
Sand is just used for glass, glass factory have intro date in 1890 so we need sand pits in those years. The included version have intro date in 1970, I think it can be changed to 1940. And a smaller version from 1890 to 1950 can be painted.

Furniture Store
The Enormous Store is perfect. The Big Store, that is inspired in IKEA, I don't think that design fits in 1965. I couldn't find info about when they started this building design. The small shop looks nice too, maybe change the intro to 1900 or 1890. We need a version for 1800-1900.

Bookstore
We need billions of new ones. My suggestion is at least 2 styles per year range. The date ranges are:
1800-1860, 1860-1905, 1905-1945, 1945-1985 (Here we include the already available one, so only one more style), 1985-2000, 2000-Infinity

Pharmaceutical Laboratory
No changes, the laboratory is in the right time and have right style. If anyone want to paint another version just to create more variation you're welcome.

Electronic Factory
I think the electronic factory can have the dates changed to 1910-1950. Then we an create a 1950-1995 version and a modern 1995-forever version.

Maybe we can extend the chain creating a silicium factory (or silicium mill, I have no idea how it's called in English), it would require sand from the sand pits. It will be available from 1950-2000 and then a modern version for 2000 and beyond.

Before the 50s we send iron to the factory. Because silicium electronics is a more modern stuff.

Beverage Factory
Bottled soda started around 1890. As the available version introduces in 1970 we need a version for 1890-1970.

Cosmetic Importer
The actual version needs the intro date changed to 1970. Then we can create 2 new versions, one from 1800 to 1900 and another from 1900 to 1970.

Maybe we can change the importer to a factory, and require rouge to create cosmetics. Maybe add chemicals around 1900 too.

Forest
Here we should create one for each climate zone, Desert, Tropical, Mediterranean, Temperate, and Tundra. All of them a mixed forest, not a human built. So those would be built from year 1 to 1790. From 1680 and on we add the one that's already included (Pine forest), in 1900 we add one with eucalyptus.

The logic is that around 1680 human reduced the cut from forests to seed his own dedicated for better wood.

The first forests can be painted later, right now we might want only the eucalyptus.

Greenhouse
The greenhouse is looking ok. But we need a version for 1900-1960 and a 1800-1900.

Farms
There are 2 big farms, named only Farm, one of them have intro date in 1900,. I think it should be changed to 1950. Because both have a similar style, are big and each just shows in different climates.

The colonial farm can be moved to 1300-1500 or/and from 1800-1920. But I think it's more accurate to be in 1300-1920.

We then need one grain farm to 1910-1950.

The melon farm is ok, rigth timeline. But we need to fill from 1800 to 1970. So my suggetion is one from 1800-1900 and another for 1900-1970.

Pharmacy
It's ok, but if anyone want to create modern styles, again, you're welcome.

Rouge
The small mine can be used from 1800-forever. The big mine can be used from 1950 and on.

Glassworks
This factory produces bottles only, as they are only consumed by the beverages factory it's obvious it needs to be available in same years. From what I've found the technique for making bottles don't seem to have changed between 1890 and nowadays. So another version from 1890 to 1970 is needed.

By the way I found this incredible picture of a Soviet mayonnaise jar.

Paper Mill
The available one is ok, but we need more. We need a very modern version for 2000, a version from 1890 to 1950 and one from 1800 to 1890.

Furniture Factory
Change the big furniture factory dates to 1850-1915. Change the small furniture factory dates to 920-1090. We need versions for this dates: 1800-1860, 1915-1960, 1960-1990 and 1990-forever.

Cellulose Factory
First, I think we can expand this chain, making the factory demand wood pulp from a sawmill. This won't expand too much, the hygienic products chain will have 5 steps. It's the same amount as the vehicle parts.

Now back for the painting: Cellulose was discovered and had the first production around 1850. But I think it's better to keep cellulose factories from 1910 and on. So we need a factory to be built from 1910 to 1970 and the existing one will intro in 1970.

Steel Mill
We need a smaller Steel Mill to be produced between 1890 to 1960.

Nursery
The nursery should have intro date in 1960 and 2 new versions should be built, one ranging 1890-1960 and another ranging 1800-1895.

Printing Works
It's alright. Just need a version for 1990 and on, one for 1900 to 1950, another for 1840 to 1900 and finally one from 1800 to 1840.

Hygiene Products Factory
I found that use of toilet paper dates back from the 6th century, mass production started in the 14th century and the modern version became production in the 19th century. So right now, as we want to fill the gaps from 1800 and on, all we need now is change the intro day of the actual factory to 1970 and create 2 new styles, one from 1840 to 1910 and one from 1910 to 1970. Since cellulose factory will just start from 1910 the first factory will require paper rather than cellulose.

Now I'm awaiting your creations, tell us what you're developing so others can focus on other tasks. I recommend you taking a look in this wikipedia article to understand the building styles through the years.

Most of the buildings from the 19th century can be used in older dates cause the revivalism brought back most of the older styles back in those years.

As I wrote in else topic, I have plan to create open coal mine. It can be used for years after 1960. But beginning of open coal mines was earlier.

But making of this mine will take a quite long time - for its size. Because it will be a really huge mine, not that dwarf like in pak128. Open coal mine must be huge. There is no else way.

Mixed forest - very good idea. It can be used for temperate and tundra.

But we need also forest with leafy trees (birches, beeches, oaks). For example: czech mountains called Krušné hory was originally covered with such forests - but as ore mining (only shaft way of mining - when fire was established in shaft and after heating of rock, it was cooled by water - and ore left rock) passed, original forest (of mostly beeches) was harvested - and replaced with fast growing trees like spruce and pine and fir.

I am worried about I have idea only for modern glassworks - it means for years after 1970.

And then, we have here chain that is currently in process. Textile chain.

Textile factory in this face is case of years after 1990 or so - because headquarters is quite clear example of early nineties. I think that postmodern is the best - but I am not sure. May it be that someone is better educated in architecture.

Example of postmodern - building of czech national bank in Ústí nad Labem:

I have idea also for older face. But at this time I don't know if that older face will be sufficiently old. I know only this about that face - headquarters will be two floors lower; roof of hq will be classic; face will be in the same colours like process building; lift will be replaced by stairs.

We can make it early, overlap the timeline is possible.

I'm doing them.

But we need also forest with leafy trees (birches, beeches, oaks).
Temperate forest will have oaks and birches.

... if I wrote that open coal mines began before 1960 (about 1900 ... in land of Czech crown was one such coal mine open in 1906), but boom (in former Czechoslovakia) of these coal mines was about 1960 ...
