I guess they realized that they misjudged the market. With all the buzz about apps, I guess even Microsoft might have been led to believe that the desktop was dead or near dying for anything but professional use.

heh they did some backpedaling on this, anything else would have been a disappointment. It was probably intented as an effort to promote development of metro apps.

That's a tough time for their strategists :they need to both enter the new world of touch screens(they fail to enter since 10 years), yet need to keep their old market alive, because it's the base of their wealth.
