Double track railway acting like a barrier for city growth

Without bridges/level crossings it is normal for railways to be a barrier for city growth. But even if they are present if takes very long until city buildings are build on the other side of a double track railway. After the first buildings on the other side have been built further buildings are built normally. It does not seem to be a problem for single track railways.

Are there some ways to influence this?

In the config-folder of each pakset, you can find a cityrules.tab. That file describes where roads and citybuildings can be placed. You could either edit that file to allow houses and roads to be buildt in more places, or you just search for street patterns that have high chances of spawning houses and build some roads accordingly, so houses might be more easily attracted.

Building buildings is a basic "map editing" functionality in the game. The best a pak set can do is to not show the button in the tool bar, but that can be changed. Pak 64 does not hide it, but only the public player can see it. You therefore have to switch player.

The construction search algorithm does not cope will with such artificial walls. Similar results are obtained if a wall of unsuitable geography, eg water or highly uneven terrain, is placed. Once a building is placed, the city area square is expanded to include it so it becomes much more likely other buildings will follow.

Simutrans needs better city building logic. Specifically construction should be allowed to jump any number of way tiles as long as it is logical to do so, eg not building into another city.

I don't think it has to do with the city area square. It is simply that the game or pak set does not come with a city rule for building buildings more than one tile away from another, or if they do, it is a rare rule.

It isn't a bug it's a feature. This way you can protect areas from covering by the city.
