To start, I know this isn't a city building game a la SimCity or anything like that but having recently picked it up I've been playing around with the different settings. I'm interested in finding out the bare minimum one can start a map with and had a few questions:

Do towns spawn organically? IE: If I started on a map with only one town, would others eventually pop up?

I know you need at least one industry on the map to get industries to spawn but what about public buildings? Do they follow the same rule where you need at least one on the map to start?

And finally, if you were to set the population to 0 and put the game on fast forward would houses spawn around the industry eventually or do you need a minimum of 50 pop to have anything happen?

I know this is a quiet sub so if anyone happens to come along that could answer these questions for me, thanks in advance.

Welcome! I'll answer what I remember. I mostly play on -freeplay so I don't worry about the econmy, and I make plentiful use of the public player tools :)

1. It's not SimCity, but there are tools to place types of buildings, and if you play with -freeplay on (i.e. game ignores negative cash flow), you can sort of make it more of a SimCity-lke toy :) I usually play not for money but my own goals like "carry as much of the industry and/or passengers/mail as you can" and "make awesome highways" :)

2. Cities (towns) do not spawn organically. Well, a good time to clarify I'm talking Standard not Extended, but I dn't think that's a change

3. Skipping :)

4. This may be an Extended question, so apologies that I'm less sure, but in Standard, nothing will pop up around industries

I do only play Standard, but I wanted to address your first paragraph, and it was so nice to have a new signup create a new topic that is VERY clearly not AI-generated spam, so I wanted to speak up for that reason, too. hehe

Cities don't spawn spontaneously, but they will grow when you provide transport for passengers, mail and/or nearby industry. Using default settings industry chains will be spawn when your cities have grown enough.

When you switch to public player you can place new cities where you want and grow them manually if you want without disturbing your finances. You can also place factories or a complete factory chain this way.

If you set the number of cities to 0 and fast forward you can wait forever for your first building...
