Powerplants and new industry chains

I was going to take part in a new extension pak focused on industries, but the project is halted yet, so I'm going you post here some advances. The pakset includes some green powerplants (wave power, geothermal, biomass and combined cicle) and some new chains (oilriggs, recycling chain, etc..) I hope I'm able to finish all I have in mind. The first preview is for the geothermal powerplant, that gets the energy from earth's heat to produce electricity.

The geothermal powerplant is finished and producing energy. It has winter version and four rotations. See it in action...



It only appears in temperate,tundra,rocky and artic climates.

I'm now working on a new bigger oil platform and some other surprises..  ;D

PS: It's already included in pak64 since 102.2.1

with all due respect to the creator, but I think that the oil rig is not very nice, why not make something close to that of pak128? :-)

That's my idea. The original one seem to be taken from a photograph, and imho doesn't fit as well as it should, and it's very small too. The one I'm developing is based on Exxon Mobile Oil Platform in the North Sea, with the extraction tower separated from the processing plant.

The oil rig is almost finished. Meanwhile, I have time to create this oil prospector ship. It's supposed to be an aquatic version of the oil pump/well (very common but with small production)

Personally I find the glowing derrick a little strange. For an oil rig I would expect a dull color and not somethign glowing in the dark ... Other than that a very nice one.

I guess vilvoh used that colour to make some contrast with dark parts of the structure
to give it more life to it. My opinion is that it doesn't need to be all realistic, especially at
pak64 which is lower size. There is some room to play when its this small...

Colonyan is right. I just wanted to add some bright colors to such a dark building. In addition, I've planned another industry chain that will also have a rig, so I needed to distinguish one from the other and I though the color of the main structures was a good choice.

Finally, here it is...the North Sea Oil rig.. it produces 200 units more than the current oil rig but it appears less frequently.

I'm going to start a new industry chain called Recycling chain.

These are the recycling points (aka green points), the first element of the chain, that will be within the cities producing waste. There should be at least one in every city. I'll try to create 4 or 5 different models.


Then, the waste will be consumed by the biomass powerplant that will produce electricity, and the Recycling plant that will produce paper, plastic and steel in small amounts.

Vilvoh: awesome. Too bad there isn't coding to allow it to produce only those goods that are already being produced by primary factories on the map... but, then, I guess if you don't have a paper mill, you won't have anything that consumes paper, either...

Hmm... that could end up being complicated.
However, in any case, I like the idea of recycling plants and collection points a lot, and I can't wait to see it in a pak(set). :) Good work on the image, too.

I'm glad you like the chain. The initial idea is to create a combined industry chain that produces energy through a new powerplant and also goods that will be consumed by end consumers (the final elements of other industry chains if they exist)

But... what if the recycling plant comes first and then the printing press connects to the recycling plant, which isn't producing enough paper?

The idea is to have another element that produces paper when the paper mill is not available, but obviously the production level would be lower, more or less one tenth.

Will the waste they produce be the same as the waste produced by scrapyards? Does a new recyclables good need to be created?

As the waste already exist as good in Simutrans, I prefer to use it. Creating a new good is a hard task mainly because you have to make the balancing of the whole industry chain, so I prefer to take advantage of what's already done and tested. It's a matter of laziness but on the other hand, it's my first complete industry chain, thus I don't want to make something very complex..  :)

All of that is cool.
The potential 'problems' I mentioned could also be considered not as 'problems' but as an optional 'challenge'. Some of us enjoy challenges in our games. Others of us don't. I think that the way you're planning this is a good thing.
When setting the recovery amounts, different materials are more easily recoverable than others.
However, on the subject of power generation, I think you can't eat your cake and have it, too. I'm no expert, but my understanding is that recycling that generates power does not generate reusable materials. E.g., if you use waste paper to generate power by incinerating it (by the by, does the incinerator generate power, or just consume waste?), yu won't get recycled paper. So, you might want to think about that. It's my understanding that recycling anything requires a power input to go from waste => plastic/glass/aluminum/steel/paper. Now, if you're accepting as waste things that should go into compost, then yes, you can generate the power for it, but I don't know if you'll get any net production of electricity.
Someone wit more knowledge in this area, please correct/confirm this.


By the by, I think it would be cool if one of the recycling functions produced fertilizer, which would act on farms like electrification does on other industries. The chemical plants could also produce it. :) But that's a big project for another place and time. :)

So the industry chain would be as follows:

Recycling point>>>>>waste>>>> Biomass powerplant >>>>electricity
        |
        |_______>>>>>waste>>>>>>> Recycling plant >>>>>> paper/plastic/steel

As you can see in the graphic above, the original design includes the idea of metane generated by the biomass powerplant, but I'll leave it aside by now. Waste consists of several elements, some of them are organic and go to the powerplant in order to produce energy, and others are inorganic so they go to the recycling plant. imho, It's the most realistic approach I can achieve without adding more complexity to the chain.

I have seen a fruit>wine>market chain in pak64 before. But I'm sure if you undertake to build a wine chain, it will be cool.

The original idea for all these food chains was to centralize the end part of the chain and have the same end consumer for all. Perhaps a mall center or a set of small and medium shops that consume all these products (juice, wine, tobacco, coffe, ice, etc..)

I wouldn't mind seeing a new Shopping Center end factory. The one in the old food chains pakset is huge on the map. I think it is too big. (and along with a new market, I wouldn't mind seeing the other factories. It could be a great improvement, and if not, then certainly interesting)

i would also like very much to see a new end market that all beverage and food products go to just like in the real world.The ones that exsist now only have a few products going to them and most of these dont make sense that they should be going to them.Like furniture going to a supermarket that should be going to a department store instead.



I would also like to see some new industry chains like a textile mill,glass factory,rubber plantation,rubber factory,vehicle parts factory,vehicle parts store,coffee farm to cannery,vegetable farm,nuts farm,fruits farm,produce farm,candy factory,coco bean farm,toy and game factory,tool and dye factory,paint factory,mineral ores mine,metal ores mine,metals factory,gems mine,department store,vehicle plant,aircraft plant,marine craft plant,heavy equipment plant.These are some of the industries that I would like to see.

I like the idea although I usually try not to create complex chains, but what does the Natural Gas rig produce that can be consumed by the Paper and Concrete factories? I don't see the relationship.

I guess it provides the energy to produce paper from wood. It's the same as for example with a steel factory. Iron ore itself is enough to produce steel, but you need energy in some way to transform it. In the steel factory case it is coal.

IIRC, that's not entirely correct. The coal is needed to get the oxygen out of the iron ore by chemical reaction, not for power supply as such...

For steel mills, either you burn the coal to melt your iron directly, or you have your own power plant. Plus, you process raw coal into coke.

For paper, you need... water?

From there cames to a Gasoline Station there be sells as Fulls for Cars,Trucks and Buses!
The useage in a Gas Power plant it enable!

This is a misunderstanding, what we call in german "Gasbeton" means autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) and has absolutely nothing to do with natural gas. Actually you add some aluminium particles to the cement which convert in the mixing process (adding water and other ingredients) into an hydrogen-gas. However this kind of gas is moreless like air (also a gas, chemically).
No natural gas is used in the AAC production.

This document is referring to natural gas as an energy for gas fired furnace (heating process).
Alternatively you can use coal or electricity to get the required temperature so natural gas can be an energy supply but is no raw material for the mentioned factories (paper, concrete).

Paper factories or water bottling plants are always situated close to the spring so you never have a transport from a well/pump to the factory (except pipelines, but we don't have pipes in simutrans ;) )

Wonder. If someone could build a computer industry, consuming plastic, steel, wires etc., coz i went 2 get one from a source, but it was unavailable.

Hello everyone, I work with Simutrans pak 128 v0.10.0 rev 8024 I try to test many addons that are not contained in it and put in the version. Often a bug comes and you have to delete the addon. What particularly bothers me is when downloadfile does not work and the links are not valid.
Here especially this link again (factory.North Sea Oil Rig.pak.zip) I could still call many other files or show here in the forum.
My question is where can I download these files or who sends me this by mail.
I would like to test them then a version of the whole file to provide.
