To fill in some gaps in the 1980s and 1990s with respect to multiple units, I have produced graphics and .dat files for the following:

  • Class 150 (DMU)
  • Class 317 (EMU - overhead AC)
  • Class 455 (EMU - 3rd rail)
  • Class 456 (EMU - 3rd rail)

The sources are available to download us (site down, do not visit) ]/Multiple_uint_extravaganza_2.zip]here. These units will be incorporated into the next release of Pak128.Britain-Ex for Simutrans-Experimental.

Please note that the sources also contain alterations to existing .dat files, particularly the class 153, 156 and 158, all of which are modified to be able to couple properly to the class 150; bugs for coupling those units to each other are also fixed.

I am also currently working on some older, pre-nationalisation suburban EMUs which should be of benefit to users of Simutrans-Experimental who may struggle to find appropriate units in the early years.

broken link, the file was actually uploaded as "...uint..." not unit.

Cool beans on the graphics!

jamespetts

Fixed the link - thank you for reporting that!

Nice work with these graphics although I would say that the 456s look like they have a vertical front end in the side-on images when in reality they have quite a pronounced slope (much more so than the 319 which I guess you used as a base?).

jamespetts

Ahh, yes, I did use the 319 as a base - I wasn't aware that they had a different rake at the cab end. How much more of an angle do you think that they need?

The Hood

Not too much - just enough to show it's not completely vertical.  You may even be able to pixel edit the two views that matter and just remove one or two columns of pixels at the top.  Granted, it's a rather subtle point though...

The Hood

I spotted a couple of bugs in the source here when I was getting them ready for loading into the standard release.  In the 317 and 455, the rear driving vehicle dat points at the images for one of the middle vehicles.

jamespetts

Thank you very much for pointing that out: fixes attached.

These vehicles were introduced in 1913, and were amongst the earliest of what became the "Southern Electrics". They were inner suburban units used on the Richmond lines out of Waterloo. The design was very similar to the Southern Railway's 3-SUB units, which I am planning to do next.

Attached is the BR 4EPB and 2EPB - a very common suburban unit on the Southern Region; introduced in 1951, the last examples of this class left service in 1995, on the very last day that railways in the UK remained in state ownership. In their heyday, they were seen up and down suburban routes on the Southern Region. The 2EPBs were originally used in the Tyneside area until that was de-electrified in 1960, when the units were transferred to the Southern. The ability to mix 2 and 4 car trains gives these units considerable flexibility (more so than their predecessors, the 4SUBs).

Attached is a .dat file for the BR Class 507/508 EMUs (they were the same except that the 508 initially had four cars, whereas the 507 had three, although the 508s were reduced to 3 carriages a few years after they were introduced). There are no new graphics as these recycle existing graphics. These were used on inner suburban workings in the Southern region and in Merseyside.

Do you mean how do you use these new vehicles before they're released by compiling your own pak files? The answer depends to some extent on whether you're using Standard or Experimental.

I'm not sure that I follow the connexion between the two things.

To use the vehicles, you will need either to compile the pakset yourself or wait for the next official release of either the Standard or Experimental versions of Pak128.Britain.

As to how I get the ideas for which new vehicles to include, I research on the internet (and use my own knowledge from using the various vehicles, in the case of more modern types) and look at what gaps need filling in the current provision.

Here is the Southern Railways 4-LAV, a semi-fast unit from the 1930s electrification of the Brighton line. Here is the Southern Railways 6-PAN unit, one of the earliest inter-urban electric units in the UK (indeed, I think, in the world), built for the London-Brighton electrification. Available from 1932 onwards, a good 5 years before the 4-COR units already in the game, these units are useful for those who want longer distance electrification using the cheaper 3rd rail earlier in the game.

Here is a BR Class 307 EMU, a high-density inner-suburban EMU that uses overhead DC power; previously, the only EMUs available using overhead power in this era were lower-density, slower-loading outer suburban types. In reality, these ran from Liverpool Street to destinations on the former Great Eastern, and were converted to 25kv AC overhead operation in the 1960s. That conversion is not featured here.

Here is an update for an EMU that I produced a while ago, a very early overhead DC unit from the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway. In the original version, the graphics were not aligned properly and were also the wrong way around. Updated .png and .dat files attached: no changes are needed to the translation texts.
