Following are screenshots for a modest (ha) train network. there are essentially 3 networks running (1 oil, 1 coal, and 1 chemical plant (fed by a half dozen oil fields and pumps, and feeding into medical facilities and printing works)). I have been adding in passengers via bus (would prefer train), and there is another set of many factories (~15) I can't make use of because of their location and my rails.

I have about 30,000,000 in money and tech up to 1953 (started in 1930 iirc).

Simutrans 102.2.2, defaults (according to Gentoo's ebuild).

Zoomed out view of most of the network

The worst station (as I see it).
There are alot of stations feeding into and out of the lower this station (7 in, 3 out). The middle station is fed into by 2 stations (which are in turn fed into by 1(central hub), which is fed into by 5(?)), while the upper station feeds into the central hub. The line around this station is a mess, jamming semi-frequently on the rare occation that all the trains need to move at once

The second worst station.
This is the hub and 2 stations which feed into the paper mill (central station) in screenshot 2. Several timber mills feed into here, and you can see a steel work and an iron mine which sit unused. The whole thing is a mess, though it seems to work. Very low traffic.

A bad stretch of track

I would use a bunch of shorter trains to feed one centralized large hub.

or, the cheaper way would be to connect the unused factories with trucks, although there's a capacity limit here.

Well, some of the problem there is that some of the factories in question are a bit hard to connect since they are connected via rail to other places (chemical plant being one).

I'll see about shortening trains in a new saved game and try to figure out where to start with a central hub.
