I guess this might be better suited to the SE forum than the main simutrans forum. I'll just toss around these ideas:

1: Revamped scaling system so one tile could be a much smaller distance (such as 20 meters or such) Already feasible with SE, although I don't know if the system gets funky at very small scales.

2: Refurbish the cityrules so a more complex zoning implementation could be made. Perhaps even a bridge with some programming language such as python. Add buildings of other sizes such as 2x2, 3x3, up to 8x8 and rectangulars.

3: Change city coverage so very large cities (up to 512x512 or more) can be managed.

4: Create new rules in the map creator so a hierarchy of roads can be created, thus organizing the city grids into something more realistic. Perhaps the road creation algorythm could derive from the python implementation mentioned at 2

5: Add a bunch of urban transport vehicles and such.

And voila, you'd have a urban traffic simulator which would be zounds more complex and interesting than transport giant or cities in motion.  ;)

Zonig is in Simutrans since ages ...

More complex zoning, not just "zoning". We have a RCI system, but the density simulation, desirability and wealth seems to be quite superficial.

To be fair the wealth- and desirability were quite superficial in all incarnations of Simcity too, and would hardly be useful to implement.

Something like a higher chance of high density within a station coverage area if that station sees a large amount of traffic might be nice and easy to implement and would give some nice developmental patterns and be fairly realistic.

I would like to see larger city-buildings but I think there was some coding issue with this that made it tedious to implement or something?
