I can't get a gui box prompting for the signal spacing when using automatic signal placing capability

Keep the control-key pressed while dragging the cursor.

In simutrans standard, you get that gui by ctrl + click on the signal icon ;)
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and maggikraut.
