I desperately need a smaller ferry than the one that came in the pak so I downloaded one.
But where do I unzip it to?

Addons go into the addon directory for the pak you are using e.g.
simutrans/addons/pak128.britain/little-red-vehicle.pak (this simutrans directory will be in My Documents or your unix home directory)
If you don't have a user simutrans directory use the directory where you run simutrans from and add it to the addon directory within that.
