Title: Winter is coming

I was annoyed for long time with the look of Pak128 in winter, where most of older buildings lack snow, so I decided to update them myself, removing the ground when possible (also to fit better with climates) and adding a winter version. It's a tiresome process, but so far I edited around 100 RES buildings.
I plan to release them in a few batches, as I don't know if I'll be able to process them all.
First release will follow in the next days.

PD: Any fans of HBO's Game of Thrones around?  ;)

Aye, winter is coming, but don't fear, as long as there's a Stark in Winterfell. ;-) (Saw the first season and now actually in the process of reading the novels)

I liked the first season of "Thrones" but only got through about 3 episodes of the second season.  Torture is not my thing.  I quit when they brought out the rat in the cage...

Looking forward to those Winter scenes.  They look good!

Very nice... It will be a nice improvement for the pak (I saw the two seasons, and red all the books :D)

Very nice!  I was just thinking about how big a task it was going to be to do that and at some point I was going to consider doing it... very well done!

I am going to start working on the trees, we'll have a winter wonderland landscape very soon!

Huge fan of the George RR Martin's "A song of Ice and Fire" series. It is quite a read, I've spent a few months rereading parts 1 to 4 when part 5 was published, in order to remember as much details as possible and thereby enjoy the latest book more.

It's good to see Game of Thrones is a tv-sequel and not a movie, there is a lot more time to tell the (very complicated) story. They did a very good job. I especially like the intro, brilliant. I still wonder though how they will do book 4 (a Feast for Crows) and 5 (Dance of the Dragon) as the story spreads out rapidly there. So much to tell in one season, it seems almost impossible.

Now I have completed 104 buildings (last week they were actually half of that, in my estimate I included also those ALREADY with snow).

I want to post here some thumbnails.

Many buildings were heavily revamped, with retexturing, new windows, new roofs and so on.

Thank you guys!

I see you found the topic, although I split it afraid it wouldn't be possible to open it due to the huge number of images.

Now more pics to see ;)

Tomorrow I'll post a zip with PNGs + DATs for the SVN. It's ready, but I wish to still edit a few pixels before official release and moving on to what is left.

I love 'em too!  The snow looks especially good on the residential buildings and parks.  Of course those lend themselves to snow cover better than high rise buildings.  Thank you so much is all I can offer until you are better paid.  Not sure what that will be but will keep it in mind.

Post by: Fabio on October 06, 2012, 10:35:10 AM
Ok, did some more tweaks (snow on hedges, removed a couple more gronds...) and now it's ok (see for yourself, I updated the preview above, too).
Or better, I don't think wasting more time on these buildings would be efficient.

So, here's the release of this first part:

Another 3 buildings repainted and rotated.
The main point here is preserving the "spirit" of the original objects, yet creating a building more consistent with the style of the Pakset.

Two towers:
NEWOLD
(http://public.gonella.eu/simutrans/winter/img/res_11_46.png)(http://simutrans.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/simutrans/pak128/cityhouses/res/res_11_46.png?revision=462)
(http://public.gonella.eu/simutrans/winter/img/res_13_46.png)(http://simutrans.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/simutrans/pak128/cityhouses/res/res_13_46.png?revision=462)

Another tower:
NEWOLD
(http://public.gonella.eu/simutrans/winter/img/res_11_60.png)(http://simutrans.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/simutrans/pak128/cityhouses/res/res_11_60.png?revision=462)
This one is much taller than default level 60 buildings (20 floors vs 12 floors). We should make a new 4-5 taller level 60 residential towers in order to give the skyline more verticality.
It's losely based (beside the original tower by Patrick) on this highrise in Milan, Bosco Verticale (http://www.stefanoboeriarchitetti.net/?p=207) (vertical forest):

I'm all for preserving the spirit :)

Aren't these white window frames too bright on the shadow side?

Also, Sarlock might have a word or two about these trees later, so don't lose the sources ;)
Title: Re: Winter is coming
Post by: Sarlock on October 09, 2012, 07:46:23 PM
Winter trees would obviously look better without leaves :)

And therein lies the challenge we face with creating a winter tree set but with all of the trees in our parks/buildings non-seasonal except for snow images.  There be some inconsistency there, but we'll have to live with it.  We don't have seasonal buildings and probably wouldn't want them as that's a lot of extra drawing.
Title: Re: Winter is coming
Post by: Fabio on October 09, 2012, 09:08:05 PM
In most buildings I put bare trees in winter. Here I thought to put bushes instead of trees, assuming they will keep their leaves, just turning them brownish, just as my Jasmine plant does on the balcony ;)
Many ornamental plants and bushes don't lose their leaves... Does it look that bad? ;)
Title: Re: Winter is coming
Post by: Sarlock on October 09, 2012, 09:12:50 PM
Try taking that big tree off the roof, it might just be a bit big and looks out of place with the snow?
Title: Re: Winter is coming
Post by: Fabio on October 10, 2012, 11:44:11 AM
I put a smaller bush on the roof and darkened the eastern windows in all the 3 buildings.

Please, check if it's better now, I updated the preview above (http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=10565.msg101599#msg101599).

Excellent!
The first building looks better suited to a commercial purpose.  It's more like a 9 story office complex than an apartment building.  Maybe change the ground floor to shop/store windows?

Very glad that you've made those changes to those buildings... the primary colours were a bit bright compared to the rest of the pak.

Just one (minor) thing, may be.
Just to add some snow on the balustrade of balconies (Are they many balconies, aren't ?)
Title: Re: Winter is coming
Post by: Sarlock on October 12, 2012, 03:30:23 PM
That's a tricky building to do a snow version of.  The steep roof would likely hold little to no snow as most would just fall off on to the poor people below (ouch!).  You'd likely only find a bit of snow on the balcony railing, some in the flat sections on the roof and some on the ground.
I wonder if putting a small awning over the front door would look good.  It might break up that bare patch of wall above the door nicely.

Very admirable!  I played with snow for a few minutes last night and found it to be challenging to say the least.  It gave me a whole new respect what you've accomplished.

I'm sorry but I need to say one thing - the snow on the pools I'm not crazy about.  Actually it is the edges.  They look too dark.  Of course it might look different in game.  I've noticed things don't display exactly the same here as there.  Anyway, maybe the dark could be lighter with a blue cast?  Just throwing something out here...
Title: Re: Winter is coming
Post by: Fabio on October 13, 2012, 02:57:46 PM
Thank you! The dark pattern is a pool winter cover, usually in dark color. The snow is in the center, where it's sagging slightly. I might give it a different hue, maybe more grayish, in order for it to be more obvious.

The reason is that the original ones look pretty good, so it took me forever to get the edge with them...
Hence, after I found the way to work them properly, I decided to create one more using the same template, level 60 ;)

Here's the release of this third part:

It contains the last 6 buildings and a new png for RES_13_60, which contained a few minor glitches.

As I don't have commit rights to the SVN, I ask please to VS (or Zeno) to download them and commit this set, together with mEGa's a few posts above.

Great work, mEGa!

The following was for me the hardest building to process, so far.
The original one had a very high quality, but it was completely out of scale, so I had to remake it, and this gave me quite hard time. I hope I preserved some of the spirit of the original building.
(And I would suggest Pak64 friends to take the old one and make a 2x2 attraction building ;))

Wow mEGa, your work is simply great!

I must only point out 2 things:

1) futuristic_tower_0 is overly ugly... your snow effect is ok, but it would actually need being scrapped and replace with a whole new futuristic tower. Maybe the old image, overhauled, could be recycled as an additional lighthouse built starting from 1960.

2) the triumph arch would be awesome if rotated... well, just if it's possible ;)

You could keep futuristic tower and rename it, in translators, to "ugly rotating restaurant at a scenic spot". There's Skylon tower next to Niagara falls, that is similarily equally ugly. It might serve as a good starting point in case you want to update it to the new style.

Wow, those new buildings are fabulous... you turned one building in to 16 (with rotations).  They resemble 1960/70's Soviet-era housing complexes... gives a nice variety to the skyline.

Greenling, to what do you refer with the upload limit for the pak?  I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me of the inner workings of pak128 can help figure it out.

The main reason for not having frozen water is that there's no mechanism for preventing ships travelling through it, so it would look a bit strange...
Title: Re: Winter is coming
Post by: IgorEliezer on October 24, 2012, 02:00:21 AM
^ What if the max. speed were set to zero?

Say: if season is winter and the tile has winter graphics, set max.speed to zero and the ship wouldn't be able to sail through.

Of course, I'm meaning source code change.
Title: Re: Winter is coming
Post by: Sarlock on October 24, 2012, 02:10:29 AM
It would make ships unusable in any area that iced over in the winter... and therefore the player would just defer to other transportation to start with and would probably never use ships in these areas.

Sure look cool though :)

I made it less colorful in winter (Raven's style ;)). Also the newer res_07_11, 15, 20, and 23 were too bright in winter. res_08_09, 15, 19, and 20, instead, were way too dark compared to the other white buildings.

I raised the same problem for monuments. I tried to desaturate walls without success. So I just desaturated trees and vegetation.
For your buildings in winter, may be, walls are too white (and not so bright...). Perhaps you can try to apply a layer with grey value ?

So the creation of Skylon tower continues : You can see first version :

That looks pretty good, mEGa!  Tough picture to draw, round is difficult... and the long mono-colour sides of the tower are challenging.

The thin white band on the snow picture just below the actual snow at the top probably needs a bit of anti-aliasing so that it isn't so pixelated.

A bit of texture variation on the tall white sides would probably help, too.

Things on the ground at the base would help draw the eye away from the long sides towards the bottom.

Well, I was thinking of rivers only. I don't think if frozen ocean shores would be a good idea, because you might want to build a harbor or canal starting from a freeze-prone tile... and you are stuck. It'd be okay if only some portions go frozen, but it would depend on a per-region climate system to avoid all shores from freezing. :)

Yes, but if rivers have an important flow, they will not freeze. Only lakes could be represented, may be. But it does not exist in the game as river or channel elements.

Actually, this isn't a joke. I propose a soft limit of 4 (four) variations, in ideal case sharing the bottom part so that some memory is saved. While all the new buildings are great and in most cases superb in quality to their predecessors, quality ≠ quantity.
Title: Re: Winter is coming
Post by: Sarlock on October 25, 2012, 02:27:24 PM
Wow, that's a lot of new buildings!  With all of the rotations added for so many buildings that have the snow option added, the amount of extra variety in cities will be _HUGE_!  A 10x10 city would hardly have any repeat buildings with the same rotation.

Is there a hard limit with regard to # of tiles or # of MB of picture data in the game itself?  Or is it just memory dependent?

It's a working...monster... Of painting stuff ! Excellent.

So my modester work (I slowly paint...) : Skylon tower for replacement of old futuristic_tower_0 :

I applied Sarlock's comments (about texture and ground effect) and LMallet's comments too (moved elevators)

and source in joined file

Another replacement made : little justice office (joined file 2)

mEGa, I would never have put or kept the old tower in a game - I didn't like it.  Yours is simply beautiful!  The elevator on the side is a nice touch. :)

Great! The tower is absolutely incomparable to original, and the house too :)

Guys... I know I am getting rather pedantic these days, but looking at the "justice hall" (?), I think another rotation is not needed, as this is 99.9% symmetrical :P

And we have a subthread :P Having seasons disrupt traffic sounds dangerously close to disasters, and we all know how that goes. How about, only unnavigable rivers freeze?
Yep, that's the best way to go. Specially considering the most players wouldn't be aware that rivers could freeze up and it would lead their barques and boats to get stuck with no notice.

Nice work as usual!

Fabio, I love that building... can't wait to see your newest version.  That style of building would look great on a water front, about 4 or 5 in a row.  If you make a series of them each a different height, it can look like it's stepped up, lowest to highest.

I like the snow inside the radar dish. It makes me smile. Anyway Fabio and Mega, all the winter buildings are really nice. Thank you very much for your efforts. I was thinking to add snow to some buildings myself, but I have no idea how to do it. Would you be willing to share some tips, snow textures, etc... so that the snow has the same appearance on all buildings?

Thank you too Vladki.
I used a current snow texture ground for base of color scheme issued of official texture of pak128. I mean Fabio too (he advised to me few moment ago).
http://simutrans.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/simutrans/pak128/landscape/grounds/texture-climate.png

We also used desaturing filter (I don't know how it's named in english) to limit tonal value of vegetation (tree, grass...) Personally I apply "40 %" value with module of Gimp. Finally I 'think winter' and imagine how snow should cover area in real life.
Don't forget sun direction and apply clearest or darkest color to create volume and 3D aspect (see joined example file )

So main aspect remains consistent for the pak.

There was a hung git process which blocked synchronisation with the svn for a few weeks. It's up to svn state now.

Here's the snow version of 2 MHz's houses.

In the /material/ subfolder there are tons of lost jewels just waiting for a good soul willing to write the dats and doing a bit of copy-paste. I wrote the dats for 4 Raven's modernist houses, which only needed a better texture for the snow (already present).

greenling, Raven's retirement is a great loss to Simutrans.
Still, there are still many of his png which, for one reason or another, were never officially released.
Today I wanted to process those 4 houses, which I stumbled upon in my project. With time, there are many more to adapt (some need a bit of hacking) and I wish to see them released.

Perhaps an open air market ( Farmers market ) selling fruit, vegetables and maybe wine and cheese borrowed from the french forum. Just an idea. Would create a whole new chain.

I'd like to note that while the new version is great, adding elements like electric lights and graffiti means it is only for >19xx.
Title: Re: Winter is coming
Post by: Fabio on November 01, 2012, 05:37:42 PM
While I live the new market in the whole, I would like it better without graffiti.
Winter lights could also be candles, so that it can remain an old, traditional marketplace introduced in 14xx (as it is now). Being this old, it's mostly built near the townhall, where I like to see it. Maybe a slightly modernized version could be available more recently, and it will be built more peripherically.

This attraction is just modified accordling with snow and winter aspect. Of course we can add it in new chain of good like french addon named 'french_covered_market', but it is not same idea of this project.
So 1 question : Do you want to move this building out of special building and create new industry ?

No, IMHO. I like it as an attraction built near the town hall. From here you can't see their merchandise, maybe it's just a flea market with no chain ;)

The large fractura A on the building stands for an Apothecracy (Pharmacy) in germany. I'm not sure if it provides anything to it, perhaps it could got as the graffiti?

I'm still in awe how you could just conjure the rotations out of nothing!

Very nice job!  I agree about removing the graffiti... though I certainly recognize it :)
I'd say no to making it an industry... keep it as an atraction.

Adding a new chain of urban food delivery might be interesting, though...

Good comment. I didn't know. I liked idea of neon sign.

I'm still in awe how you could just conjure the rotations out of nothing!
Me too. At each time I hesitate, and after "time in the bath" as french people says, the work is made.  But I admit to transpire a lot. Painting in 2D is attempting the impossible !  :o

Sarlock do you know french addon named "french covered market chain" made by Gwalch and me ?

So definitely, I shall erase graffiti. But I ask me about "A" neon sign because finally it's a recent material... And market_place begin to appear since 1800... What do we make about it ?
May be we ask us too much question, don't we ?

I'm reluctant to add any more commodities to the game, but half of those in that chain are already in the game so it's not too bad.  I'd like to mostly stick to items that we already have and just add more end users and alternatives for those products.

The commodities could be adjusted to bread (bakery, which doesn't have a product right now, it's just a consumer), meat, milk, beer, canned food, food, fish... so many choices of commodities already in the game.  Adding fruit and vegetables might make for nice farm variety, however!  I'll download those factories and try them out, thanks for the link.

i'd love to see that chain in the pak, instead of just being an addon. The number of different commodities is not so much what counts, but the number of different freight types. This uses only freight types already in the game: goods and cooled goods.

All the time I favored high level buildings, as I find them much more interesting.
I suddenly realized that low level buildings (level 1 to 10) need love, too.
They are as important and distinctive for a city as the level 60 ones, as the two ends are the one most noticeable by players, respectively in the outskirts or rural areas and downtown.

Hence I decided to work a bit on Patrick's modular row houses.
I'm adding them rotations (how silly when their doors don't match the road!) and restricting them to colder climates (and extending their timeline, as I removed antennas ans the such).
As I don't want to reduce the housing choice, I created replacement (with same levels and details) for hot climates as well.

EDIT: Images removed, cold climates follow; hot climates discussion here (http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=10790.msg103781)

Honestly I don't know whether to add vegetation or not, for climates issues.
This concern goes for most buildings, I would like a discussion about it.

What other details would you like to see? Antennas look nice, but restrict the timeline to 1950+ age. Flower beds could be added. I would tend to exclude fences for these row houses.
I'm open to suggestions. :D

I'm agree with fabio about too typical of periods of time. But I believe that it is necessary to create a little more some vegetation.

I agree, it would be nice to add a little bit to the yards for these houses... the houses are quite small so there is a lot of empty tile that comes along with these.

Once I have some other tree selections available you could use those for the temperate-rocky varieties (and eventually the warmer trees, but that won't be for another month or two until I get to those).  You can use the younger trees which are smaller.

The desert houses certainly could use some love.  I'd actually prefer a white-washed wall and red tile roof, personally.

Ok, a couple of trees, some flower beds and some hedges added. Also roofs of 2 colors, now (grey slates and red shingles).

It contains the latest buildings (2 MHz's houses, Raven's modernist houses, and the 10 cold climates row houses; desert houses are postponed instead) published since last release and their sources.

As I don't have commit rights to the SVN, I ask please to VS (or Zeno) to download them and commit this set.

2) We want building choices to be available across several climate zones.  No sense eating up memory and pak space for a building that is only good for 1 climate zone.  Ideally, I'd like to see a single division between A)tropical/desert/med or B)temperate+ for the vast majority of buildings.  Many can apply to more or all climate zones, but I think 2-3 should be a minimum in general.
Definitely my plan as well! After 80-90% of buildings are made this way, we could think of some to differentiate desert vs tropic vs med and tundra vs rocky vs temperate (there are already 2, at least). But now the priority is the bulk of the buildings, so 2 climates ("warm" and "cold") are the way to go.

A new batch of houses is ready ;)

These houses (as well as next batch) experiment a new alignment to the sidewalk, with a backyard (like the blocks) instead of a front yard (like most of the other independent houses).
They are also aligned to a side of the tile, so they can happen to become semi-detached, according to what is built near.

I am amazed at how quickly you managed to do all four rotations.

Four rotations in 2D are not trivial, but I paint all of them at once. I start making a "map" of building's footprint on the tile i 4 rotations: seen everything "top-down" helps a lot with positioning and non-rectangular parts. Then I "build the walls" is solid color; if it's not a rectangular building, I split it in rectangular parts and copy-paste them on the ground map. At this point I add a roof with the same method of splitting non-square parts. Eventually, I give the walls a texture using a flood bucket tool. After that, I start adding windows thinking: if on these 2 walls they are like this, how will they look in the next rotation? Similarily I add the details (vegetation, chimneys and so on), often using just the ground map to place the trees correctly in the four rotations. Finally I copy-paste the whole lot, add the snow, and replace trees with their winter version.
This whole process can take several hours, but I make now batches of 10 similar buildings, so that most of this process can go in parallel (e.g. if I get the windows right for one, I copy-paste them in the others and just change some lesser detail).

One small complaint for 00_20, 00_25, 02_15, 03_15 :) There's no doubt these are apartment blocks, even if small, so some connecting staircase/corridor must be there, usually forming a distinctive vertical element (?) inside the house - often placed "above door" (for lack of better words). It is common that this thing has different windows. Sometimes big ones, maybe even with balconies, sometimes smaller ones, sometimes placed between levels... Lack of this is somewhat noticeable. It's a (minor) mistake on many other buildings already, as all have what I'd call "window monoculture". Given that you're painting these anew, maybe you could try some variation in future models?
Title: Re: Winter is coming
Post by: Fabio on November 13, 2012, 12:22:02 PM
Agreed. These stairwells are usually in the back side of the building (at least in Italy*), for building not extremely modern. I already put the back door in correspondence with the front door (hence assuming there is a ground floor corridor between the two). I'll try to put different windows above the back door in buildings of 2+ storeys (I might as well edit these 00_20 and 00_25 later, after I tested this solution in next batch).

* It was (is) considered that the street side of the building is the "master" side, with living rooms and main bedrooms, whereas the backyard side is for the kitchen, washroom, secondary bedrooms, and other "utilities", including the stairwell and the elevator shaft, when present.

Ah, that makes sense, too.

I tried to find some examples of this, and to my astonishment, could not find (m)any. Lacking evidence, I take that back ;D It seems to be mostly a feature of some concrete panel blocks, namely the one where I spent my childhood (file 07).

Next batch will transform some houses 1 tile wide into row housing.
Here's a preview, before details and vegetation:

Row houses look better in 8 rotations, so that corners are handled better.
I'd appreciate some feedback before it's too late. ;)

Hi,
Very very good work !  I ask me a question : do the set not too uniform because row houses are too similar ? I'm afraid city with this buildings show monotonous aspect if each model grows in same area ?

Another suggestion to improve aspect of high-rise block: put down pipe (pipe where rainwater falls towards ground, I don't know this word in english) in border of house for break monotonous line.
I don't know if you understand, sorry for my poor english.

Beautiful!

I particularly love the corner blocks, those are lovely.

Seeing the rows of trees in the backyard really makes me wish there was a way to get tree-lined sidewalks.  I guess the only way to make that happen would be to have a building set back from the edge of the tile enough to extend the sidewalk in to the tile and add the trees there.  And then that leaves a lot less room for the actual building... and it would conflict with the tiles beside it that didn't have the tree-lined sidewalks built in.

Another idea would be to have trees outside the edge of the tile but then they would interfere with stations and other road additions.  They'd look fine on a bare sidewalk but otherwise would cause a visual conflict.

Unless the road itself was modified to have trees on it... but then they'd be all over the entire urban area and be repetitive.

It's good to dream, though :)

you could use trolley-bus catenary as a means to get tree-lined sidewalks.

THe idea of a timeline of wayobj instead the standard sidewalks is around for ages. I first though of it for the electric lines in downtown cities for pak64.japan. (It contains actually two such useless wayobj.)

Really fine. I love purple trees (prunus ?). A big work as usual ;-)

Not even a catenary, just a wayobj (as also street lights in Pak96.Comic). It would be beautiful, although useless for gameplay. I would make it cheap to build and with no maintainance, so that if you want eyecandy you don't pay for it.

On the other hand, it would be nice to incorporate it directly in city roads.
I could think of a is_cityroad=1 setting for roads: those would have their speed limit floored to 50 km/h (lower is accepted, but not higher) and wouldn't be overtaken by the city.

Prunus indeed, at least in my intentions ;)
I was sick and tired of the stock few green trees, so I went for something different and also widespread in cities as an ornamental tree.

Good idea, really. I 'm going to think it in my future addons

Why not have it being built automaticaly the same way the city takes away the roads from the player when it builds a building nearby.
When the build being built surpasses a certain building level the roads would turn into city roads with trees and/or lights on sidewalks instead of normal city roads. That way the "improved city roads" would be built close to "wealthier" buildings.
