Title: How to get Simutrans-Experimental [Deprecated]
Post by: jamespetts on April 12, 2009, 03:33:32 PM
Note: These instructions are now deprecated. See here (http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=16703) for how to get the latest vesrion. However, the legacy versions referred to below (Simutrans-Experimental 11.x) will remain available indefinitely in case anybody has a reason to use the older version.

Latest [legacy] version

The latest version of Simutrans-Experimental is Simutrans 112.3 Experimental 11.35. The release date is: the 30th of June 2014. The latest set of the configuration files for Simutrans-Experimental was released on the 20th of July 2013. The latest version of Makeobj-Experimental was released on the 20th of January 2014. Please note that .pak files compiled with Makeobj-Experimental 11.0 or later are not compatible with Simutrans-Experimental 10.27 or earlier.

Complete packages

A .zip file containing all the files needed to run Simutrans-Experimental (containing Simutrans-Experimental version 11.35 and Pak128.Britain-Ex version 0.9.1 (http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=13185.0)) is available for Windows, and can be downloaded here (http://www.bridgewater-brunel.me.uk/downloads/Simutrans-Experimental-Complete.zip). This is the easiest way of installing Simutrans-Experimental for beginners. To install it, just download the .zip file, extract it into a convenient folder, and run Simutrans-Experimental.exe. To make accessing it easier, create a shortcut to Simutrans-Experimental.exe on the desktop and/or start menu.

Complete packages for other platforms are not yet available - you will need to download Simutrans-Standard and one or more paksets in the usual way (see here (http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=1536.0) for a tutorial), then get the Simutrans-Experimental program file (executable), and add it into your Simutrans directory.

In future, I plan for there there to be automated installer packages for each platform.

Program files (main)
(Executable binaries)

Windows

To download the Windows executable for Simutrans-Experimental, click here (http://bridgewater-brunel.me.uk/downloads/Simutrans-Experimental.zip). Then, unzip that file into your \Simutrans folder. It will not over-write your existing Simutrans executable, as it has a different name. You can then choose whether to run Simutrans.exe (the normal program: Simutrans-Standard) or Simutrans-Experimental.exe (this version). Be sure also to install the included bzip.dll in the same directory as Simutrans.exe.

Depending on your configuration, you may also need to download and install the MSVC++ redistributable package, available from Microsoft here (http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=30679). If you get the error message, "The application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect" in Windows XP, or "Application failed to start because side-by-side configuration is incorrect" (Vista) when you try to run Simutrans-Experimental, then you will need to download and install these files. You may also need to extract the bzlib.dll, pthreadVC2.dll and/or pthreadVCE2.dll file included with the binaries .zip package to make Simutrans-Experimental work if you do not already have this file installed.

Linux

Unfortunately, the automatic Linux builds are currently not working, and the versions linked below are older versions. I recommend that people compile their own for Linux at the present. To download the Linux executable for Simutrans-Experimental, click here (http://www.43-1.org/%7Esimutrans/simutrans-exp/i386/simutrans-exp-latest) for the i386 (32-bit) version, or here (http://www.43-1.org/%7Esimutrans/simutrans-exp/amd64/simutrans-exp-latest) for the amd64 (64-bit) version. Make sure to use the correct version for your platform. Once the file has downloaded, transfer it to your /simutrans directory. Run it by typing the executable name (for example, "simutrans-exp-latest") at the command line, or set up your window manager to execute that command from a menu or icon (how to do this will depend on which window manager (e.g., Gnome or KDE) that you use). Your existing installation of Simutrans-Standard will be unaffected. You will need to make the file executable by using the following command: chmod 0700 simutrans-exp-latest. A version with full debugging information is also available: get it here (http://www.43-1.org/%7Esimutrans/simutrans-exp/i386/simutrans-exp-latest-dbg) for 32-bit, or here (http://www.43-1.org/%7Esimutrans/simutrans-exp/amd64/simutrans-exp-latest-dbg) for 64-bit.

Very big thanks to Ansgar for providing automatic Linux builds for Simutrans-Experimental. Please note that, because these are compiled automatically, there may be a slight delay between the release of a new version of Simutrans-Experimental and the availability of the latest version of Linux binaries.

For running a Simutrans-Experimental server with remote administration, a specially compiled text only binary is necessary. The 64-bit (x64) version of that (together with Nettool) is available here (http://bridgewater-brunel.me.uk/downloads/linux-x64-server-binaries.tar).

Mac OS X

Mac OS X versions of Simutrans-Experimental are not regularly compiled, however, M. Collett has very kindly provided a one off build of version 11.31, which can be found here (http://simutrans-germany.com/files/upload/simutrans-experimental-11.31.zip).

I should be very grateful if anyone could set up an automatic build for Mac OS X.

Amiga

What is now a very old version version of Simutrans-Experimental for Amiga OS 4.1 can be downloaded here (http://www.kolumbus.fi/%7Ey609773/amiga/simutrans-ex-os4bin.lha). The latest version available is 7.3, which is now very out of date and does not include a substantial number of Simutrans-Experimental features. I cannot assist with installation instructions for Amiga, as I am unfamiliar with the platform. If anyone can assist in producing installation instructions for the Amiga platform, that would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks to Thematic for the Amiga compile.

If anyone would like to make a more up to date build for Amiga, that would be most welcome.

Program files (Makeobj)
(Executable binaries)

Makeobj is the command-line application used to make assets (vehicles, buildings, roads, etc.) for the game. It takes a set of .png images and some specially formatted text files (with the extension ".dat") and turns them into .pak files, which can be read by the game. Simutrans-Experimental has a number of new features which use new parameters in those .dat files. To make assets that take full advantage of the new features of Simutrans-Experimental, the accompanying version of Makeobj must be used.

Windows

Makeobj is now included with the Windows binary package, here (http://bridgewater-brunel.me.uk/downloads/Simutrans-Experimental.zip). After downloading it, unzip that file into your \simutrans directory.

Linux

Unfortunately, the automatic Linux builds are currently not working, and the versions linked below are older versions. I recommend that people compile their own for Linux at the present. To download the Linux executable for Makeobj-Experimental, click here (http://www.43-1.org/%7Esimutrans/simutrans-exp/i386/makeobj-exp-latest) for the i386 (32-bit) version, or here (http://www.43-1.org/%7Esimutrans/simutrans-exp/amd64/makeobj-exp-latest) for the amd64 (64-bit) version. Many thanks to Ansgar for his Linux versions of Makeobj. As with the Windows versions, these versions have a different name to the standard versions, so should not over-write anything if installed in the same directory.

Mac OS X

An very old version of Makeobj (6.7) is available for MacOS X here (http://jtoomim.org/code/makeobj-experimental-6.7). Because it is an older version, however, it will not compile objects with features introduced since that version. Anyone who would like to volunteer to make regular release builds of a Mac OS X executable, please PM me. Anyone who would like to use a later version of Makeobj-Experimental on the Mac OS X platform will need to compile it from the source code for the time being.

Amiga

There is no currently available Makeobj version for the Amiga platform. Anyone who would like to volunteer to make regular release builds of an Amiga executable, please PM me. Anyone who would like to use Makeobj-Experimental on the Amiga platform will need to compile it from the source code for the time being.

Program files (Nettool)
(Executable binaries)

Nettool is the command-line application used to administer a Simutrans network server remotely. Nettool can shut down the server, announce it, kick/ban players, send admin. messages, and force a resync.

Windows

The Windows version of Nettool is now included in the main Windows binary package, listed above.

Linux

A Linux x64 version of Nettool is available for download here (https://github.com/downloads/jamespetts/simutrans-experimental/linux-x64-server-binaries.tar). Note that this version is bundled with the server binary.

Other platforms

Nettool-Experimental is currently not available as a pre-compiled binary for other platforms, although I am hoping for Linux support soon. If anyone would like to volunteer to produce pre-compiled binaries for Nettool, please let me know, as I should be most grateful.

Data files (Paksets)

Simutrans-Experimental can use all of the normal Simutrans-Standard paksets (such as Pak64 and Pak128) without any modification. However, to take advantage of some of some of Simutrans-Experimental's unique features (http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=1959.0), a pakset made for Simutrans-Experimental is required. See here (http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=2313.0) for more information on Simutrans-Experimental compatible paksets. Note that paksets are not platform specific: i.e., the same pakset can be used on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, etc., without any modification.

Source code

Both Simutrans-Standard and Simutrans-Experimental are open source (http://www.opensource.org/docs/osd) software. They are distributed under the Artistic Licence (http://www.opensource.org/licenses/artistic-license-1.0.php). Furthermore, it is cross-platform code, so should compile on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X or even BeOs of either 32 or 64 bits.

The source code for Simutrans-Experimental is hosted and managed by a version control system called "Git (http://git-scm.com/)". The source code can be found on this Github page: simutrans-experimental (http://github.com/jamespetts/simutrans-experimental/tree/master). Simutrans-Standard is mirrored on Git here: simutrans (http://github.com/aburch/simutrans/tree/master). See here (http://kylecordes.com/2008/04/30/git-windows-go/) or here (http://nathanj.github.com/gitguide/) for a tutorial on using Git for Windows, here (http://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/gittutorial.html) for a tutorial on using Git on Linux, and here (http://wwdevries.net/2008/04/14/how-to-install-git-on-mac-os-x/) for some information on using Git with Mac OS X.

Configuration files

Simutrans-Experimental uses the same format of configuration files as Simutrans-Standard, but there are additional options and features in Simutrans-Experimental that can be configured, and there are also one or two additional configuration files required. Here (http://bridgewater-brunel.me.uk/downloads/simutrans-experimental-config.zip) is a set of configuration files for Simutrans-Experimental.

Extract the two folders (/config and /text) into the folder that you use for Simutrans-Experimental (e.g. ../simutrans-experimental). Do not put these files into individual pakset folders (e.g. ../simutrans-experimental/pak/config), as these configuration files are the base files, not the pakset specific files. The files in /config set configuration options for Simutrans-Experimental. The files are documented with comments.

The files in /text provide additional texts for the game: Simutrans-Standard requires certain additional texts to Simutrans-Standard. As of version 5.1 (18th of July 2009), all language translation texts are included. However, only certain languages have full translations for Simutrans-Experimental. They are:

If anyone would like to produce translation texts for any other language, the texts are available on Simutranslator (http://simutrans-germany.com/translator/).

For Linux, at least on OpenSuse- remember to chmod the simutrans executable to let it run.

chmod 0700 simutrans-exp-latest

Just tried the new link to the binaries same result. I'll try again later just in case there is something wrong my end.

Ok I've been trying for the last hour or so and I'm getting the same results. I'm running IE8, but I use compatability mode when going to web sites that may not have caught up with the latest technology.

The first link is http://ftp//experimental.[ simutrans [dot] us (site down, do not visit) ]/public_ftp/Simutrans-Experimental%20Complete.zip it should be ftp://experimental.[ simutrans [dot] us (site down, do not visit) ]/public_ftp/Simutrans-Experimental%20Complete.zip.  Also, even with the corrected link, I still get an empty file.    The 2nd link works, but the download is semi-slow.

When I add :// after ftp to make it ftp://as soon as I click the link it converts it back to just ftp//

I'm not sure what you mean by '2nd link'? I can only find a link to v 6.4 and one to v6.5 they are both labeled Binaries and both go nowhere.

Also! If I click either of the Linux Binarie Links I get pages of machine language/windings/hieroglyphics

Nobody uses FTP anymore :(.   For anonymous transfers HTTP won out.  For user transfers we have SCP/SFTP.  May FTP rest in peace.  :-)

PS.  I don't think I would really miss it.

Well, FTP is fine for transferring public files, like this. It supports resuming interrupted downloads. And it is faster than HTTP; but these days, I think more people have problems with FTP vs. folks on lower speeds like dial-up where FTP might make a bit of difference. So I don't think I'd call FTP dead, just... surpassed.

BUT!! Is anyone going to attempt to reply as to when, if ever, we can download the latest Simutrans-Experimental?? It's all well and good pontificating about ftp and http and uncle Tom Cobley but it doesn't get us any closer to solving the problem.

That's not correct. For example many people load the files for the homepage with ftp in the net.

Do you use Firefox? Than you can load a very nice addon "FireFTP". Very fast, stable and easy.

I am very sorry that people have been experiencing problems downloading some of the Simutrans-Experimental packages this week; apologies also for not having replied in relation to this sooner: I have been rather busy this week.

After having some problems with files.simutrans-germany.com, and also needing to upload larger packages (Pak128.Britain-Ex and the complete package) than Simutrans-Germany could comfortably support, Isaac very kindly gave me an FTP account at [ simutrans [dot] us (site down, do not visit) ], to which I uploaded the files.

However, for some reason, the complete package file does not work, and, when downloaded, produces an empty file. I do not understand how this problem has occurred, or whether it is related to using the FTP rather than HTTP. I have not yet had time to look into the problem: I hope to have some time on Saturday or Sunday evening.

In the meantime, the complete package can be downloaded from the secondary link (a public file sharing service), and I think that the base binaries for 6.5 work on the primary link.

Isaac, if you have any idea how the problem occurred, I should be most grateful for any suggestions. To everyone else - apologies for the difficulties.

Incidentally, I endorse Sojo's recommendation of FireFTP. FTP is certainly not dead, and, if it is faster than HTTP, it is a superior technology that should be used for transferring large binary files where possible.

The account I set up is a full-blown webhosting account, for example, with email and sql databases if you wanted. :)

FTP or SFTP can be used to upload files. Either way, the home directory you start in will contain public_ftp and public_http - those folders being the relevant public roots.

The way uploads work: a temporary file is created. Once the file is fully uploaded, it is renamed to the final filename. Perhaps something went wrong at this point, although I'm guessing, because this is not a problem I've noted before. :)

If you FTP client supports "SFTP", it might be worth it to use that protocol instead. (This technically connects via SSH - advantage being that the transfer is secure; but more importantly in this case - using a different protocol).

I personally recommend Filezilla as a trouble-free and completely-free FTP client, but of course any client should work fine.

If it were me, I'd upload under public_html, since most folks nowadays are more comfortable downloading via http - and will download links via their browser anyway.

Failing all else, you could even SSH into the server after uploading the file, and for example, from the initial directory:
cp public_ftp/yourfilename.zip public_html/yourfilename.zip

That would make it available in both locations.

(If you don't have SSH software, I recommend PuTTY (google for it - location can change) or http://www.bitvise.com/tunnelier which is a very very powerful package that allows you to remember login details so you log in with the click of a button, and gives one-click access to SFTP transfer as well as SSH terminal windows - it's awesome stuff)

I assume the scope of discussion was "to download files via Internet" -- but I would highly recommend against using FTP to upload files to hosting -- use SFTP instead, where possible, and consider ditching hosts that don't support it. FTP is inherently open to sniffing; SFTP is encrypted.

Hey James, here's high praise for Experimental. I've just reinstalled Experimental and I'm running my latest game which was running under Standard. I couldn't believe the difference in the speed, Experimental is running really smooth but standard runs like everything is being pulled by a string. (Jerky and slow)

I presume thanks must go to Knightly for that?

Terrific work A1 credit rating.

PS: Map is 1024x1024 and I have a massive Passenger system running.

Colin,

very glad that you like it :-) Performance may well be down to Knightly, who has improved things greatly. I'm not sure why Standard runs more slowly, since that version is generally lighter computationally, but I'm just glad that Experimental works well for you :-)

I'd be interested to see your saved game if you don't mind uploading it.

I had a problem, i can't see the description of each truck (i had tried only with road transport) i can see only the amount of resources it can transport, but i don't see the mainteinance cost or the max speed.
Another thing, the category of the resources is shown like CATEGORY_02, all but live headstok.

The problem is that nobody has translated Simutrans-Experimental into Spanish yet. We currently don't have any volunteers for that, and I don't speak Spanish, so I can't help. If anyone would like to do so, I'd be very grateful.

I used the 6.6 link < blush >, I got  little confused and In my excitement i pressed the first link I saw, whoops...

I'm very interested in Experimental's ideas for realism and its 128.Britain pak, its all amazing considering I've been playing simutrans for years (without doenload) and only just found this community.

While on the subject, what is the best realism combo at the moment? I'm reading lots about increasing map distnaces to introduce comfort, journey time etc, what is the most complete realism package todate?

Shunter,

thank you for your enthusiasm! The only complete pakset specifically set up for Simutrans-Experimental at present is Pak128.Britain-Ex (where things are already set up to what has so far been determined as optimal), although we are still working on getting the balancing right for that. It is, to some extent, still work in progress, although that work is helped enormously by people like you giving it a try and letting us know what does and doesn't work well. Do let me know how you get on - happy playing!

Hei,

I tried to compile simutrans-experimental on Mac OS X, using both sdl and allegro backends, but I failed. I am sending gcc output since first errors appeared, maybe it will help somebody.

Hi folks.

I'm unable to get 7.1 to run in 32bit Vista Business. When I try to start the binary, I get a dialog saying that the application has stopped working. The main window shows up but stays blank. I've downloaded and unpacked the Britain-Ex 0.3 pakset and the experimental configuration files. My simutrans-experimental directory has the executables and "config", "pak" and "text" directories, the "pak" directory containing what was in the pakset zip file. I've tried renaming that to pak128, but it didn't help either. I installed the VC++ files mentioned earlier, too, and even that didn't help. Any ideas? Is there a log I could look at to see when it breaks?

Onre,

welcome to the forums and to Simutrans-Experimental! Sorry that you can't get it working. The problem is sometimes caused by a rogue settings-experimental.xml file in your /My Documents/Simutrans folder. Try deleting that and see whether that helps. Incidentally, Pak128.Britain-Ex 0.3 is somewhat out of date, I think; if I recall correctly, 0.4 is the latest version. Try downloading that and see whether that helps.

The latest version of Simutrans-Experimental is Simutrans 102.3 Experimental 7.1. The release date is: 19th of December 2009. The latest set of the configuration files for Simutrans-Experimental was released on the 19th of December.
I'm always confused by which version of Standard into which I should be installing the Experimental binary/config. Would it be possible to tell which Standard build it's based on/which we should be using? Or perhaps you are and I'm just misunderstanding.

For example, the above says to me that 7.1 is based on Standard 102.3, but the build of Standard for the 19th of December is 102.2.1. Should I be pulling that, or a nightly for 102.3? Also confusing is that nightly builds of 102.3 weren't even available until towards the end of January?

The 'master' branch on github appears to have no commits since January (2010-01-26).  Is the 'devel' branch the one you're working on?  (I notice the parentheses bugfix isn't online yet ;-) )

I really can't seem to get the hang of git.  I'm not at all sure how to work with it as I would do with svn or cvs.

Neroden,

the "master" branch is used for releases. The "devel" branch is used for updates in between releases. The automatic Linux builds come from the "master" branch. As to Git - did you have a look at the tutorial?

Yeah, still can't get the hang of it.  If you have *your own server* it seems straightforward enough but I *don't*.... which means the instructions on "Using git for collaboration" *fail*.  I can't instruct anyone to pull from my repo because it exists only on a private computer.

There's something complicated involving git-format-patch and git-send-email which I may be able to figure out eventually.... but which appears to give horrible, unreadable results in the case of changes involving major churn.  Bleck.

It looks like I get no benefit from actually using git unless I have my own server!  Pulling tarballs and providing patches against them appears to give *BETTER* results.  :-P

Neroden,

you don't need your own server to use Git - you can use Github (http://github.com/), which is what I use. It is a public repository to which you can push your local files, and from which you can pull files from other people's branches. Do have a go and let me know whether you can get it to work. In the meantime, I'll have a go at using your .diff files...

Everyone else,

I know that some have been having trouble getting the files, but the server seems to be working now. Might I suggest that anyone who has trouble before have another go at downloading the files, and let me know if that does not work?
Title: OK, I figured out how to use git!
Post by: neroden on April 05, 2010, 09:21:38 PM
 This is the "secret" I hadn't figured out -- since simutrans is an open-source project, anyone can get a free account on github.

Which means I can use git in the "online" manner in which it is supposed to be used.  :)

At which point this was the key page telling me how to get started: http://help.github.com/forking/   ;D

I think I'm getting the hang of it now.

What's the difference with config/simuconf.tab standard and experimental? Since I used the latter but thought that "sim-ex" could be simply dropped where the standard install is, especially if the standard has already been run before (I noticed the experimental build seems to require display_width and height set, unless -res option is used). A "full" archive with Pak128.Britain is not out of the question, either, since I noticed there were similar releases for other platforms.

But the customary way to install is to let the user put one directory wherever, and have everything that is exclusive to the program, under this directory. If the user has HOME env variable but doesn't want to install it there, singleuser_install should be 1.

It's a manual build, ie. I ran make after editing (with proper defs) two additional files compared to standard. I have made notes (http://nopaste.info/9d51d67b2f_nl.html) about these as well. I compiled with a native compiler, but even a slightly dated cross-compiler would probably come up with a statically linked executable.

Thematic,

the simuconf.tab files can be used interchangeably, but it is better to use the Simutrans-Experimental specific simuconf.tab file, as it contains settings specific to Simutrans-Experimental and documentation to go with them; it also has a number of things that are balanced to go specifically with Simutrans-Experimental. Could you let me know specifically what edits that you made to the makefile? It would be good to have a version in the official repository that supported the Amiga platform, too.

R-T,

the [ simutrans [dot] us (site down, do not visit) ] server has been down recently. I do not maintain the server, but I think that it is back up now. If you are having trouble accessing the server, the best thing to do is try again later.

Hi

To get a working version but the lightest possible "simutrans-experimental" I downloaded and installed in the same folder:
Simutrans experimental (main executable binaries)
Simutrans experimental config files
A "pak" compatible

I tried the game and missed the music, then I copied from the "simutrans-standard music folder. And everything seems to work perfectly. But I fear that the game seems to work well but in reality there is something missing which I have not yet noticed. Can anyone tell me if the packages that I copied / installed are valid as working installation of the game or something missing?

Those upload sites are really terrible (current ones for 9.0). Something that doesn't fail all the time and make you wait an hour after the download fails to start to try again would be nice? Even mediafire is better.

Title: Re: How to get Simutrans-Experimental
Post by: Milko on December 23, 2010, 09:51:26 AM
Hello

Simutrans 102.3, standard or experimental? And do you want binaries or source code?

I try to answer anyway ...
Simutrans standard (stable) 102.2.2 - http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=4642.0
Simutrans standard (102.3 - "nightly" daily update) - http://nightly.simutrans-germany.com/
Simutrans standard code (102.2.2 and 102.3 daily patch) - https://github.com/aburch/simutrans

Simutrans Experimental binaries (102.3 - 9.0) - http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=6429.0
Simutrans Experimental code (102.3 daily patch and version 9.0) - https://github.com/jamespetts

Simutrans experimental does not have nightlies.

Hi,

Is there anywhere I can download a linux binary of simutrans experimental that will run as a server without the graphics.
I am running a server on a vps but I would really like to be able to reduce the overhead by just going cli. At the moment I need to run it in a vnc session which is not good.
Thanks in advance,

deMangler,

thank you for your query. Unfortunately, the person who runs the automated nightly builds has not set them up to produce the no graphics server version. However, you can compile it from source on Linux - just pull from the master branch on my Github repository (https://github.com/jamespetts/simutrans-experimental) and compile using the simgraph0.cc (have a look at the makefile to see what options to select). Some information on compiling, although some of it is specific to Windows, can be found in this (http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=6556.0) thread, which covers certain dependencies and libraries that you will need to compile Simutrans-Experimental.

Please note that, with the current version of Simutrans-Experimental (9.5), you will not be able to join a game hosted on a Linux server from a Windows client or vice versa (or, indeed, any combination of client/server compiled in different architectures). This is a known bug and work is underway to fix it for the next release, 9.6.

Thank you for your interest in running a Simutrans-Experimental server!

There isn't a ready-to-use package for the Mac, but I think all the ingredients are linked to in James's standing instructions (http://"http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=1894.msg19644").  Get a copy of the config files, and add into that folder a copy of the Mac binary and your pakset of choice (e.g. Pak128.Britain-Ex or pak.64-exp).  Double-clicking on the binary should then start up OK.

Best wishes,
Matthew

However, I have a problem.

Welcome back!

I think that Prissi must be right - I suspect that Simutrans is showing up as a possible threat because it is capable of acting as a server. The only thing to do is add an exclude rule to your anti-virus software, I think.

Install this (http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=5555) if you are using 32-bit Windows, or this (http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=14632) if you are using 64-bit Windows.

Try downloading this (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30679) package for the 2012 redistributables. Also, did you copy all of the .dll files in the .zip file into your ~/simutrans directory?
Title: Re: How to get Simutrans-Experimental

Ive done that but when I moved all of the .dll files to /simutrans it says I cannot use it because the .dll files are missing.
And The Redistributables don't help it.

Title: Re: How to get Simutrans-Experimental

Thank you for letting me know. Can I just check: have you installed both the 2010 and 2012 MSVS redistributable packages that I linked, and installed the 64-bit versions of both?

If so, then this is a not entirely straightforward problem that will need you to install a software utility called "dependency walker" to give me the information that I need to help you to solve it. The ultimate problem is a missing .dll file, but the tricky part is trying to find out which one is missing.

Perhaps moving it to some more official place would be better.

May I suggest that you install the Visual Studio 2015 redistributable packages? Recent versions have been compiled with Visual Studio 2015.

I am hoping to set up cross compiling soon, which will produce a nightly executable that does not need these downloads.
