ATTENTION: In our resources (http://www.simutrans.com/resources) page from our portal you can download the latest version of the official logos in vector (EPS) and raster (PNG) and with no need to download the font files.
I've been searching the forum and found some people asking for a logo in Simutrans Experimental and Graphics.Simutrans.
So I decided to create it, I searched this forum and the old archived forum and downloaded the official logo in svg format.
As I was thinking in a logo for graphics and experimental I decided to make some changes in the official logo and the nightly logo.
1.1 Simutrans Official LogoThe Official logo, I think it's perfect, but the font used to write Simutrans didn't look good for me, so I made some search about a new font, but then I remembered a font that I got installed. And for me it's perfect, the font is from a set of 'road sign fonts' it's an exact copy of the official font used in USA. The font fits perfect in a
transport game.

1.2 Simutrans Nightly Build LogoThe Nighly logo is cool too, but I didn't remembered that it already has a logo, so I created it anyway, I just changed the background color for a night effect, added a moon and an hotel sign and wrote Nightly above the logo with another font from the same road sign set.

1.3 Simutrans Experimental LogoThe Experimental logo came from my mind immediately, I tried to made a sketch effect in the logo, to me it gives the idea of experimental, it's like the programmers are "drawing" Simutrans.

What I usedI've used roadgeek 2005 font (Download here (http://www.4shared.com/file/glfudGy7/roadgeek2005v2-complete.html)) on Simutrans and Nightly words and Harrison font (Download Here (http://www.dafont.com/font.php?file=harrison&page=1&nb_ppp_old=10&text=&nb_ppp=10&psize=m&classt=alpha)) on Experimental word. For the logos I edited the official logo from stormoog(?) in Inkscape.
4. Comments & MoreThe logos keep a standard for Simutrans. (I'll talk more about create a Standard for Simutrans on another topic.)
I also created the icons for all of them, cause I was thinking about something like the executable for each of them with those different logos, so when running it you know what you're running. Explaining better: Simutrans stable version use the official logo, the nightly version use the nightly logo and experimental use the experimental logo.
I didn't created the graphics logo cause I had no good ideas yet, but I'm gonna post it here when done.

Just the Hotel/Bed sign in the Nightly Build logo makes me feel a tad out-of-place.
Maybe this should be rather some "attention!" sign, as the nightlies may be broken?
I think the attention sign (/!\) would distract the observer from the actual message: Nightly Build. About being broken or not, it's secondary.
I am more for "less is more" philosophy, though. Then, IMHO, I'd remove the sign. A quarter moon (or full moon) will reinforce the Nightly idea.

I really love them, specially the experimental one, although the shape of the tree has too many lines in the inside.
The nightly compilation site already has a good logo, maybe you can mix them, and add some stars to yours.

I think this new nightly logo is better than the nightly build site's logo. But some stars would be nice, and a nearly half moon (slightly on the quarter side) would be good.

Actually there is the default logo at the boot up of pak64 nightly... probably we could use it there in the nightly builds? (not at the homepage...)

A blueprint background didn't look good, the logo became too confusing, it's already not so clean, and with lines at the back it became too dirty.
But I liked the idea of some tools over it. I will do it another time.

I created three with stars, one with full moon and two others with half moon. You can clearly see that I created two constellation:
Crux, better know as
Southern Cross, and
Ursa Minor with
Polaris, better know as
Polar Star. The constellation give an International look, Southern Cross representing south and Ursa Minor representing north. Here are they, full moon, half moon and 'realistic' half moon

I have no ideas right now, and I'm still thinking in a Graphics logo, but if an idea come from my mind first I'm gonna do it first.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. You don't need to have clutter in the background, just make the ST-X logo blue with white lines, similar to what you have except I don't think the tree needs to look sketched. I think the tree is the big thing that makes this look like a PakHD logo.

Perhaps for g.s.c, you could do the same logo without the smoke, with another type of train alongside the first one, or with a building in the background, to symbolize the paks and other options on the site.
I love this... some unification across the varieties of game is desirable :) Perhaps these logos could be shown above pak selection box? Since some paksets already use their own logos, this wonderful unity would work nicely there.
I'd agree with skreyola that the sketch-like look makes me think of pakHD. On the other hand, maybe it's only because we know it exists?

OK maybe you're right, I just called it 'realistic' to say that alternative B is different from C and because when you look at an half moon you see a ball with a darken side and a lightened side, if I was searching for reality the southern cross will never appear even close the Polar Star. And it's just a logo, you can do what you want, if you want UFOs shotting lasers we can do it.
Also that makes me think about a poll to choose the logos. But including the current official logo of Simutrans and Nightly.
PS:I'm with some ideas for Graphics, but still thinking how to put it on Inkscape

that should create some room for tools to be placed inside the boundaries.
and maybe the graph lines could be done so that they're coming out of the same point as the train is?

On the subject of the Experimental logo - unless the suggestion made above to show the logo on the pak selector screen is adopted (which may have some benefits), there is not a need for a Simutrans-Experimental logo per se, as the logo used is whatever logo accompanies the pakset being used with it (by default, Pak128.Britain-Ex). Although the logo is well drawn (my preference is for the earlier version), I am keen to get away from the idea of Experimental having graphics (etc.) that emphasise the "experimental" nature of the project, because Experimental is not just a test-bed, but a fully-fledged fork that, when sufficiently stable and tested, will become "Simutrans-Extended".
However, I do like the nightly logos - the purple colour is rather fetching :-)

Course you can give your feedback, sorry if I looked rude :-[, but I just wanted to show my point of view. As you can see, both logos became great because of feedbacks like yours, I need to thank all the feedbacks given ;D.

I like this version. The blueprint idea looks good to me, too.

I do like that nightly logo. One small comment if I may: the stars would look better, I think, not as bright white, but the same off-white colour as the moon or even the trail from the locomotive headlamp. The contrast with the background is at present higher with the stars than with anything else, making the stars appear unduly prominent.
They do look much better at reduced size, I think.

It looks like Ursa minor (small bear). The star at the tail is Polaris. It nowadays indicates the location of the North Pole and thus can be used to know where the north is in the northern hemisphere.

Well I made Ursa just like I saw in Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ursa_minor), I tried to copy the size of them. Anyway I can try make a slight move in it.
An_dz: It may be OK like it is on Wikipedia - because from different place (meant mostly different equator - Prague is about on the 50th equator) it can be seen different.
In fact the constellation rotates around its tail once every day (aprox.) and once every year (if you take a picture from whatever location from where it can be seen every day at 23:00 o'clock, it will do a whole rotation in one year).

What's the problem you're trying to tell me? All the icons have a 256x256, 128x128, 48x48, 32x32 and 16x16 inside so compatibility is full for all versions.
Program icon is just the first icon found in program resources (maybe with special name). You can link it like another resource, perhaps even after normal linking. Depends a lot on what "standard tools" is for you... But unless your tool seriously wants to outsmart you, there will be a number of simple ways around that. Of course, the question is if you want to spend time going around then :)

This is not try. ICO will be selected on color depth and size. I just repeated the informations from MSDN on which sizes XP will use ... ok, I will try ICO with higher resolution.

one major gripe with the nightly logo though. If it's not supposed to be the earths shadow on the moon, a 3/4 full moon looks quite different:

Desaturating the tree might also make the logo look more nightly. It looked fine enough without any stars at all. They're a bit too symbolic, but what should they symbol, but night?
I think the second experimental logo to be the best. I don't think it should be worried about confusing it with pak HD, that's distinctive enough. The blue background and the lines seems to me a bit overloaded, too clean for actual blueprint paper and not really bringing the message, unless you know it.
Having a simutrans logo implemented, before the pak logo will have too positive effects: Firstly new players will be immediately aware if they play a nightly version. (e.g. when supporting we can just ask them what colour their logo has) Players will be more aware that paksets are modules for simutrans, and can be replaced. It also looks cool :-)

Windows logo, it's the brightness coming from a window with 4 different color glasses. Turkey flag have a moon with a small circle inside that we can call a 'shadow' and it's impossible moon have such a small shadow circle inside it. The only way to happen this is looking from moon to earth, so moon shadow can make this effect on earth.
For Christians a white skin Jesus is crucified on His hands, and the reality is that probably He was crucified on His wrist, otherwise the hands will be cut and He will fall on the floor before death. And a white Jesus in middle east is nearly impossible, He probably had light brown skin like middle east people. Nobody in medieval era was going to kill the middle east people to conquer Jerusalem if they look-like Jesus.
Logos are logos, if looking for reality what about buying a train put it on a place with grass wait to get night and moon appear on a cool place, pray to not rain and take a pic? That way the reality is 100%
PS.:Don't want to look rude but we all know that the logo need to be cool. Nobody told Enzo that the horse muscle is not right or that the horse hair is wrong from reality on his logo.

I think now we can't use it anymore, the Experimental Logo version 2 now is the logo for pakHD, download version 0.4 and you'll see.

Sorry An_dz, i did not want to sound unthankfull or overcritical. I am also quite aware that a logo does not have to be very accurate or realistic. The earthshine is also quite nice. It's just that the moon terminator has a completely different form and makes the moon a bit unrecognizable. The dark part of the moon has positive curvature (convex) in a lunar eclipse. It has negative curvature (concave) for a more than half full moon.
Don't forget the moon phases are not comming from the earths shadow on the moon, but from moon's night side not facing the sun.
The stylized moon for example in the turkish flag works, even if it is not physically accurate, because it is a small crescent shaped moon. The curvature of the terminator/occlusion shadow is the same. (i'm pretty sure the turkish flag shows a crescent moon, and not a almost total lunar eclipse, correct me if i am wrong.)
So again, i don't want to be overly critical, or demanding on physically highly accurate modeling. I only want to give an suggestion to get a very good Logo even better.

The last experimental logo is i think the better one. but i'm not good to judge it as i don't like it a lot, it hasn't the clarity and power of your idea.
An_dz, maybe it is just the combination of earthshine (realistic) and unrealistic shadow (a realistic one always goes from north pole to south pole) that seems strange (and therefore not so cool) to some of us.
And also, I wouldn't call the image of Christ "a logo" and it is not the best of examples I can think of, but I get your point.
Don't worry I just wanted to point my view of the logo. When creating the moon I spent some hours until it looks cool, and that was the best I could do.
You said that the moon is unrecognizable. But when I tried to create the negative curvature it don't look cool, only if I add Earthligth effect it looks a bit better, but not there.

Full moon(realistic) look too strange you need to force the imagination to see that it's a moon. It looks more like a drawing error than anything.

To be honest, I never like Simutrans-Nightly logo. Somehow this white light thingy turned me off. Would be nice to change the colour into orange colour to suggest that it is sunset.

The pak192.comic logo looks good although I would remove the tree at the front between the one and the nine. The pak96.comic seems too yellow for me.
Really clean and colored the comic one. But it have a high recognition. So I like it. Have you a svg for me?

VaclavMacurek asked me, quite long time ago (August to be exact), to create a logo for the Pak128.CS, it was almost finished since September, but I got busy and couldn't think on what I should do to polish it. But now it's done.

As you can see, the tree and the train were changed. The train is Class 150, it operates in both Slovakia and Czech Republic, the paint job show both flags unified as one. The tree is a lime that, as Vaclav told me, is a national tree. In truth I'm thinking to change the tree to make it look more like the lime Vaclav sent me.

Maybe I'm repeating myself, but you might want to render/save/show these logos on black, since that's how they will be in game. Doing the black background already in your editor allows antialiasing the image/black border, which will otherwise look.... less optimal :)

The black background can be transparent, as this woudl save a lot of image size in the pak file. But that could be cured by a pixel fill, while still retaining aliasing.

Emil, you are right that it seems too long but if you would observe any train in few angles (and it will go very fast), then train would really look much longer than it is.
An_dz, at first glance there are two things that are at least strange:
- class 150 is electric, so at least electricity receiver should be in picture too (else it looks quite odd)
- view deformation of front side is really strange - because it becomes higher as it goes to backward; but I am not sure if it is right or not; perspective should cause that front side becomes lower as it goes to backward - a little
I'll add the electrical receiver and also the powerlines.
I'll work better in the front. And it just looks higher, but it's the same height. The gradient gives this feeling.
An_dz - I was wondering, would it be possible for you to create a version of the Simutrans logo which is fairly square and omits the Simutrans name? I need an icon for the new Mac distribution I am working on. Something around 512x512 (or indeed, a vector graphic which scales nicely to this kind of size). If you could make it look nice and Mac-icon-like that'd be a bonus :)

the simutrans text should be below though It can be rectangular, higher than wide, so it could just go below the square logo Timothyh requested, if that looks good. (adding something below a square is always a bit tricky)

Those look good :) I had in mind something like the current favicon used with the forum, and with the game executables, but bigger and more 3D. I am really no good with this kind of graphical design, it took me ages to do the TileCutter icons, so I will leave the creativity up to you :)

It is not true mistake but ... You wrote you used class
150, not class 350. By the way, I found that class 350 is only one locomotive with this arrangement of (modern) receivers.

Which size do you (it) need?
From my knowledge Mac Lion now can handle icons up to 1024x1024, that I see no reason to have an icon this big. Anyway a vector file is enough.
I still need to create the iPad Lauch screen that's 1024x768, but it's easy and not so important now. The iPhone and iPad icons need around 3 sizes, 114x114, 57x57 and 512x512. But those icons are cut by Apple to make the radius around the square.
512x512 for the Mac icon should be fine, it will scale down nicely. Bigger icons are for the forthcoming HiDPI modes which will come in the next couple of years (and if it's a vector image then there won't be any issues). The main graphical constraint for the Mac icon is that it should be slightly 3D, like other icons on the Mac. (There are guidelines here (https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/AppleHIGuidelines/IconsImages/IconsImages.html)).
Make the iPad launch screen 2048x1536... iPad 3 announcement is just around the corner and I have a hunch that it'll have a screen at that resolution :)

That sounds like the old program icon from Owen Rudge. Seth' logo was a big circle with a cross inside, and the four modes of transportation (air, water, road, rail) in the quadrants. The horizontal bar of the cross had "Simutrans" written in it. It was rather big, I'd guess around 500x500 pixels. I remember pastel yellow as color, but I thinkt here were four pastel hues for the whole logo.

Yes, that's the one. I once had a color version in a fairly high resolution of that. Seth C. Triggs made it, and I have later made this grayscale, smaller version of it, also did the little 3D shading effect. Would be great to have the original again :)

@mods, sorry for double posting, i thought it would be confusing to put it into the last post too.
I'm not a maintainer so I won't say anything to other uses of this logo. Just that the engine appears to be too long (bad perspective). And the front pantograph collides visually with the electrification pole. For the colors, if used as non CS specific, I would suggest original green-yellow colors that gave this engine one of its nicknames - banana. since the image would need to be square, reducing the length of the locomotive would be welcome. I looked at the 'banana' livery too, and liked it, it is a bit unusual.
Well, it is not unusual for Czechoslovakia. Many czechoslovak electric engines built for 3kV DC used to have similar livery during 1970-80's and many of them still have it. E.g. http://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lokomotiva_130
'unusual' was not a good choice of words, it's a colour scheme that stands out and is not very often seen on the net today.
I like it, i think i've seen it in czech children films likely made in the 70s or early 80s. (CS made some of the best children films/series when i was a child [Pan Tau, Chobotnice z II. patra, Krtek, etc])
