Title: Ground tile information
Post by: micslu on September 29, 2009, 08:05:45 PM
Hello!
I would like to request implementation of information of blank ground tiles.
Presently there must be building, road, rail, river/stream or trees on the tile to generate tile information (Inspection tool).

It would be very helpful (at least for me) if following information will be displayed when clicking of any tile, even blank ones:
* City name, if the tile is within a city territory. (So perhaps blank if the tile is in middle of nowhere)
* Climate - now that we have such feature.

I determined that a factory needs to be located within 69 tiles straight from City Hall to have workers/mail.

However, it is tedious counting tiles. Since city buildings already display its City name, it will be nice if all tiles can also display their City names, even the blank ground tiles (and perhaps even non-river/stream water tiles).
Climate: this will be helpful when deciding where to build new factories (as public player). One can memorize beforehand, perhaps, but this is a game!

My main reason for this request: my cities are expanding (growing) and I am trying to serve passengers with intra-city branch rail line. I would like to place the last station on or near the edge of city limit. However, stations/stops outside of city territory does not generate development (passengers), unless the stop serves a Curiosity. So it would be nice to be able to click on any ground and find if that tile belongs to a City or not.

I being just a player do not see any adverse effect implementing this feature. (Of course I'm not a coder!)
Thanks!

A thing I'd like to see implemented is a way of displaying municipality limit.

Municipality limit would be a yellow line that shows cities' territories on terrain. So I don't need to build-destroy-build-destroy a stop to discover which is the nearest city and which "territory" I'm building on.

So there seems to be 3 city limits:

- city building limit
- city factory limit
- city influence limit (e.g. if I build a station, which station is nearest)

This is indeed valuable information.

Oooh, I'd love to see those three implemented!

And perhaps in the future, when network play is enabled - it might be that a company might somehow obtain (or be assigned -- by the game admin) rights to operate in a city (limits or influence-area)...

I wasn't aware there were such distinctions. I thought City Factory Limit = City Building Limit.
If this is so, then it would really be helpful to have some indication of the limit line.
Straight lines from City Hall (N/S/E/W) can be counted, although tedious, but diagnols are problematic.

Do you really manually count them tile by tile?  :o Why don't you use the map coordinates of the townhall and add/subtract the distance as appropriate?

Oh, so there is a scientific way of counting!  ???
Actually the only time I counted the tiles was when I was testing for factory placement (see my first post above).

Like I said, tiles can be counted one by one or with coordinates or some other way for sure, but it would be helpful if the ST game engine can indicate the city limits.

Of course it would be better if Simutrans showed these boundaries. I didn't mean to turn that idea down - not at all. I just wanted to point out that, right now, things are maybe not quite as "tedious" as you mentioned either. ;)
