Title: [0.9.0] issue with upgrade to new ST & pak version

Hi,

i have an existing PakBritain Experimental 10.27 game, which was started back in April using my own makeobj compile of PakBritain Experimental 0.9.0 from James' Github repository. FWIW the PC is running Win 7.
The game is going nicely, but with all the improvements in Simutrans Experimental 11.10, I decided to transition to the new version.

Using the combined download of STE 11.10 & PBE 0.9.0 releases [which is probably not the same as the April down load although nominally the same version number], installed in a new directory tree, I loaded the latest savegame.

Oh dear - the trains are mostly unable to find routes. Investigating, new way images seem to have loaded very nicely [more pretty bridges!], but the data for ways and vehicles seem to be rather confused. The tracks are showing axle loads of the previous version's weight limit. Bridges seem fine. And the trains are showing an axle load of the vehicle's previous total weight, when viewed in the details dialogs. In the depots, the new vehicles are offered, but there seems to be some difficulty with the vehicles that are in service.

Does anyone have a way to ensure that the upgraded vehicle parameters are picked up when the savegame loads? I really would like to take advantage of the improvements (especially items like the premature reservation of track when reversing)
I do recognise that this could equally be posted in the STE program forum, but I'm sure those in the know read both!  [ Mods: Please move it across if you prefer ]

Hello - sorry that you are having difficulties. The reason for the difficulties that you are having is the transition between vehicle based weight limits and axle/convoy based weight limits for ways and bridges respectively. Because these values have to be stored in the individual way tiles, there is no straightforward way of upgrading the limits when the pakset version changes.

The best thing that you can do is disable all weight limits by pressing the "i" key, going to the "Experimental" tab, and setting "enforce_weight_limits" to 0. This is what I have had to do in the Bridgewater-Brunel online game, which also transitioned from 0.8.4 to 0.9.0.

Oh dear. I do not want to have to start again from scratch for a while. As i get one or two 0.5-1 hour sessions on average in a week [, the time spent on building a decent functional network is too great to abandon until a game has reached it's logical conclusion. Yes, long term strategy!

but, if (horrible thought) i were to replace the way tiles entirely by new way (on a 'spend lots' approach) then the vehicles would move correctly?

And i suppose it's futile to request that a translation to import older games be provided. Have to say that this restriction on in-game upgrading was not something I saw documented in the forum (but I might not have read it, quite possible knowing my need to skim-read).

Ta anyway. i'll try the new version eventually, a shame to have to stay where I am, but 10.27 does give a very decent game so no worries.

Well, did you try to disable the weight limits too? It's a decent work-around for the issue, as mentioned.

Indeed, just change "enforce_weight_limits to 0" as James suggested and you can continue on playing like before.  I imagine that the weight limits being off won't affect your enjoyment of your map :)

Replacing all the ways manually should work in theory, but it doesn't seem very practical; disabling weight limits is probably the easiest thing to do.

I shall give it a go - although i am sure that a few routes are dictated by weight limits, so results may be 'interesting'....yay, we like interesting!
I had looked forward to the new axle-weights as a great improvement to realism, but there is so much else to consider that it's not the end of the world.
Be interesting to see what the changes really do.
