When I start my simutrans I get this error.

Couldn't initialize SDL: No available video device
Failed to initialize backend.
I'm using Ubuntu LTS 64bit and simutrans 64bit.

Then this is a wrongly configure SDL. Simutrans jsut ask for the default mode. Simutrans did run also without a GUI using the framebuffer of SDL. So I am afraid, I cannot help you.
