Title: big modification of buidings_city
Post by: mEGa on November 11, 2012, 04:11:11 PM
With winter project (http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=10565.msg104276#msg104276 (http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=10565.msg104276#msg104276)) I arrive at step of modification of big buildings like grass_stadium, high_school... I decided to really improve these because of many reasons :
So this is what I plan :
Grass_stadium
high school
What do you mean about this transformation ?

Splitting stadium into multiple types = OK. But I would make a replacement for current one, without any running track, and new ones maybe 2x3 with correct track shape. I have never seen it rectangular, only oval. Also... if it is possible, could you make old versions with more normal grass (not striped super green grass)?

I like the plan for high school :)

Stadiums should also have some tribunes for spectators, I guess.

Would you also feel like making one or more hospitals? We used to have one, but the author went missing so we had to remove it when we released open source.

The running track is more oval at the ends, yeah.. but then we'd need to extend the image another 2 tiles in one direction to fit the extra track.  Having some seating areas on the edges would be nice, even just the metal bleachers kind.

I could make a couple of hospitals if you like... that would be a fun project to tackle now that I'm done my SFC.  After I'm home from vacation, of course...

I love the plan for the high school.

The running tracks usually begin on the longer side of stadium so that you can run 100 m in straight line.

Ok I noted your feedbacks and thank you.
For stadium, you're comments are rights VS . it was too rectangular for tracks. I am going to begin again new sketch like this :
All stadiums will have some tribunes for spectators of course.

@Vladki : yes. I 'll modify direction of straight tracks.
I shall present you new version soon.

Yes, it's also an idea which I had for addons specifically French.Sarlock: you can begin with no problem at all. Your style will be so good for that ;)

Finally ii was painted on on 2x3 tiles.
I'm going to create 3 another rotations after your possible comments.

Beautiful! I love especially the turf, so realistic!

But do rugby fields have flags at the corners as well? I believed that was peculiar to soccer... ???

Just a minor detail: probably outside the fence it was better with the sidewalk, or maybe transparent, so it blends better with the different climates "breaking" a bit the tile. If you go with 4 rotations, you should put the small building and the tribunes on the side near the road, with the sidewalk. The other 3 sides could be transparent outside the fence.

Yes of course there are flags in corners... But you're partially right : they are triangular and not rectangular as I drew them. I'll corrected them.

Yes you're right again. I had same thoughts and I think that I'll apply transparency zone if test of pedestrian texture seems uggly. I will show you for comments before decision.
Thank for your right feedback.

Anyway, would you mind adding substitutes benches for the football stadium provided it would be enough place there?

If you replace something with larger size, maybe you should propose a replacement with the same size to avoid holes in older games.

Good suggestion. Thanks Prissi. May be basket ball field or soccer street ?

Here new proposition :

Notice: I moved fences on inline borders and apply pavement texture only on one border. protection of goals are a little grew up too.

One question, however... doesn't our sun shine from due south?  The shadows indicate a south-western sun direction  ;)

(not that anyone besides us would even notice)

Well, I noticed your last comments and applied them. Final version views :

There is an example (joined file) to replace original grass_stadium as Prissi noticed. Maybe we can only replace little soccer field...

I believe there will be also the other 2 views, as they are needed given its non-square shape.

I would love to replace the old smaller one with a basketball court, or with a tennis court, being both smaller also in real world. (maybe both, and we'll have a complete sport fields set :D).

Great work, Eric!

I'm agree with you. But is it a problem with name of original 'grass stadium' if we paint basket ball court on asphalt or cement ground ?

Funny how a "real" rugby pitch would be around 6 tilesx4 tiles in size to be to a 20m/tile scale. (actual pitch is 68m wide by 112-122m long).  It would be huge!

This looks great, mEGa... the white lines on the pitch are at strange distances from each other, but that's such a minor thing.

I think it should be kept as a grass stadium/field for consistency with old loads.  We can still make the other fields additionally.

Again: you can replace it with something different if you replace the name in the compat.tab. I can even become a church or whatever. It is just for old game compatibility, that buildings with exactly the same name must have the same size.

Yes you're right ! The challenge is exactly to make a credible ratio between reality and 2D rendering in the game.

According right Prissi's comment, I decided to create tennis court set (changing room, grass court and clay court) on 2x2 tiles replacing old grass_stadium and I want to create soccer stadium when would have some time.

EDIT :
See joined file : sketch of project of tennis court set. Becareful, there is no detail and no accessories. I want to put fast food along changing room and a garden in front of the entrance.

In r1044.

I took the liberty to
1) add a copyright string on the image
2) set an intro_year=1845 (when the Rules of the Rugby game were written, although the guard's truck is anachronistic, but heck, it didn't have any intro_year at all!)
3) swap rotations 3->0, 0->1, 1->2, 2->3 although I'm afraid they are used slightly different from 1*1 tile buildings. The change is meant to have the small building and the pickup truck nearest the road, but we need to test rotations thoroughly.

Thank you, mEGa!

Hi, there is last news about grass_stadium replacement.

Here 4 view of tennis_court

(http://www.simutrans-france.fr.nf/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=fr:tennis_court_src.png)

I 'm going now to paint winter season.
BTW, finally I decided to offer new sport set with tennis court and replace old grass_stadium by a new version wich is more simplified :

(http://www.simutrans-france.fr.nf/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=fr:grass_stadium_1_s.png)

As it is very simple I 'll paint only 2 views (+ winter views of course)
So I think, in first time, we  will have enough representations of classical fields of sport. Yes I know big stadiums would also be needed. Next time after been completed projects in progress !
What are your thoughts ?

Tennis net: maybe just make it brighter than the lines on the ground and add a pixel or two for the band that holds the net in the centre.

Tennis guy: it would be fun to have this practicing guy animated, but I understand that it might be a lot of work... Anyway good work, I just get the feeling of lazy hot summer afternoon, when it is too hot to play tennis, only one kid is playing against the wall.

Football (soccer): I just feel that the circle in the middle is too small... And please add at least some benches for the spare players and couch ;) This looks so lonely... Maybe fewer trees?

A few more comments to tennis court - top right rotation is missing some fences (between court and house). And the practicing half court with wall seems to be inconsistent in all rotations - lamps are in different positions, and the court seems to be shorter on the two images at the top.

Otherwise  :thumbsup:

IMHO cities are already overly green, except out of the center.

What would really help greener cities is 5-10 parks coded as level 50-60 com and res houses for downtown areas.

i very much like the new football pitch, with just a few trees sourrounding it it reminds me of a town i lived a while.

Three little recommendations: Such a pitch is often not so well maintained, some wear at the area in front of the goals perhaps?
A foodpath, just grass trampled away and brown ground comming out on one side of the pitch, just below the trees would be good.
The lawnmower stripes are something of a high quality pitch, not some small place beyond trees, i'd go for a homogenous grass colour with wear as described above to avoid a large green area.

Hi community,
I was sick but I do better now. Well, after noticed your comments I painted again and improved stadium. I show you last version of grass_stadium replacement:

EDIT : image is revisited with last version.

(http://www.simutrans-france.fr.nf/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=fr:grass_stadium_all_src.png)
modifications are :
- cutted trees and added fences and benches as Fabio suggested
- added mud on field near goals and benches as Sdog suggested
- erase grass ground on borderline (transparent ground parameter will be added in dat file)

I suggest this replace old_grass_stadium attraction to get solution of compatibilty with old games as Prissi noticed.

This football/soccer pitch is just amazing! An excellent work, I just love it! And the mud is just so real!
If I might only suggest one thing, substitutes' benches could use a bit more contrast with the grass, you kind of easily miss them.
Tough choice, if you go much lighter, you'll lose them in the snow... Maybe some sort of yellow/orange/red color, or any better idea.

If you need to do something more... maybe make the training course wall 1 px thicker...
Otherwise, I'm speechless as usual!

Another idea for a sport-themed attraction: a 9-holes golf course, something L shaped 6*3... Or even 18-holes, if you dare so! Here an abandoned attempt a few time ago: http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=3915.msg39047#msg39047

The new football pitch looks brilliant. With the wear it appears quite real.

Hi guys,
There is first version of high_scholl_1 revisited :

New Old
(http://www.simutrans-france.fr.nf/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=fr:high_school_1_all.png) (http://www.simutrans-france.fr.nf/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=fr:high_school_1_old.png)
I come back with package version soon.

Looks great!

What I don't like are the windows on the shorter walls, especially the one near the end.
Those short walls
could have instead the floor-to-ceiling windows typical of public buildings stairwells. Otherwise, an external emergency stair could be good as well.

Thank you for your nice feedbacks.
Well, there is last version completed with Fabio's comment applied (floor-to-ceiling windows were the fastest modifications)

sources (included, dat, png files and xcf source files):
http://www.simutrans-france.fr.nf/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=fr:high_school_1_src.zip (http://www.simutrans-france.fr.nf/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=fr:high_school_1_src.zip)

(http://www.simutrans-france.fr.nf/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=fr:high_school_1_view.png)

parameters on dat file are a little modified because a there will be second high_school for old period (since 1830...) as I mentioned it in previous post.

Obj=building
Name=HIGH_SCHOOL_
Copyright=Patrick & mEGa
Type=cur
Build_Time=11000
Chance=25

As usually, could you download and commit them ? Thanks per advance.

I'm cooking now (See Fabio's joke about furnace in another post) last addon for xmas release : high_school_2 (old building appearing since 1830)
So I show you project in progress with this sketch from inkscape (without any texture and details...), but philosophy of aspect of building is visible.
It's purely a city building, lined by only pavements of streets. I'll certainly put some trees in the courtyard between wings of house

Very nice!  It hardly even needs the east rotation given how symmetrical it is... But it sure looks nice either way  :)
