<em> 1)</em>You have no problem with building materials in the first building you build in a new city.<br>
<em> 2)</em>You can destroy buildings of a city and get back their building materials.<br>
<em> 3)</em>The first building you ought to build in a new city you want to develop is a building yard.  Supply it and you'll be able to build more<br>
<em> 4)</em>Coal, iron and oil are only available in certain areas of the map.  Check the <em>Raw materials</em> section in the Progress tab when being 'public service'<br>
<em> 5)</em>A new city adopt all buildings nearby at no building material cost.  You can build a new industry first on behalf of one city and then build a new city near it and adopt it.<br>
<em> 6)</em>In the early years, it's better to found cities, one near another and also near raw material sources.  Natural water ways are a plus too.<br>
<em> 7)</em>Some raw materials like clay or stone can only be found at certain heights above the sea level.<br>
<em> 8)</em>Cities, when a certain size is reached, will demand furniture and pottery (china or hardware).<br>
