Title: manually adjusting track speed
Post by: Fr0ggy on June 01, 2012, 12:05:21 PM
Hello,

I've another simutrans question :P

Is there any possibilty to limit a max speed 280km/h track to 200km/h? On my map I've one train running at a speed of 200km/h partly on the high speed line (270km/h). Naturally the slow train blocks the fast ones so that the fast ones have to wait in front of a signal when following the slow train.

I know it isn't possible for a train to adjust its speed to the one in front of it as simutrans is always checking the tile in front of them and doesn't go any further in front. But is there any possibility like a max speed sign for a given track in simutrans or any way to work around it?

Thanks :)

Why not just use 200km/h track?

It is possible to make a minimal speed sign - slower vehicles may not pass. That's all. I guess it does not help your situation at all.

There'll be many more speeds available after I finish the new set poof tracks, but obviously not all speeds all the timeline along... I wish we had some signals like presignals, allowing to pass unrestricted, or with a speed limit if next next block is occupied.

you can always add a passing loop.

How do these passing loops work? I can only imagine that the slow train has to stop while the other train passes by. The slow train then has to get up to speed again, and ends up blocking the next fast train instead.

well, it's not perfect, but that is basically what happens. The key is, however, the faster trains can overtake. If there's no room for overtaking, they will be stuck behind for a long time, if not, forever.
