I am in the year 1900 and my garage shows a "stagecoach" with intro date 1400 and retire date 1960. But I cannot buy it as it is marked red. Why is that? Also happens with other buses/trucks/trains in different years. So I guess my general question is, what is the meaning of the red bar underneath buses etc. in garages?
Red means you cannot place this vehicle into the current position within the convoi you are building. Not knowing what pakset you are referring to, my guess would be that you need horses or so first, and then the coach...

As DirrrtyDirk writes, I think so. Lilleskut, filter vehicles with disabling of showing of all vehicles. Then you should not see wrong vehicles - it means you should not see vehicles that may be only pulled or so.

Isn't that what the red bar is for? I don't see how hiding a vehicle helps. It only limits the choices to apparently useless horses. The help text could be a bit clearer that a red bar means that the vehicle can't be used in this position in the convoy, not that it can't be used at all. But do people read the help text in the first place?
If you on the other hand change the assembly sequence from Append to Put in front, the stage coach will turn part yellow part green. Clicking on it will then automatically add horses before it, just like tenders are automatically appended to locomotives in Append mode. If there are multiple possibilities, the convoy must be comleted manually.
It would be quite nice to see "Stagecoach must follow one of: Carriage Team" especially in pak128.Britain where there are dozens of railway carriages available and it's far from clear what can follow what.
If a vehicle can have only one in front (as opposed to a choice of engines), imho the red bar should be yellow-red instead and selecting that vehicle automatically uses put in front mode (and append as well: if you have a tram made of 3 fixed elements, selecting any of them would buy all three of them, regardless of append or put on front mode).
