Last week I discovered Simutrans and decided to give it a download, however when I ran the installer I got an error.

I tried installing again today and got the same thing.
OS is Windows, Simutrans version is the latest version on the site's download page (like 112.1 or something, the site won't load now so I can't check).
Any help is appreciated.

I've just tried twice and worked. Since the files are hosted at SourceForge.net, probably they had some instabilities and the download failed.
I recommend you try again. If still not work, tell us. :)
