Title: Map Networks improvement suggestions
Post by: saaws on March 08, 2014, 07:51:22 AM
Hello. I've played Simutrans a lot lately and here are couple suggestions I came up with.

1.  For the minimap, how about you can choose a option where you can only see the airplane routes or train routes, rather than all of them at the same time?
Or instead, how about rather than showing the network map for all companies, you can choose to limit only seeing your company's route.

2. When the game designates each route with colours, how about you can set it so that if the line name includes a color, (e.g. LA Metro Purple Line) the map draws the line with that colour only.

A filter for the types of transport was suggested some time, but never reached an agreement.

I you select a line or open a schedule, this schedule is shown in the minimap.

I'd like to add to this request, a filter to only see goods of a certain type. We can currently see only passenger or only mail lines, but all different types of freight lines are lumped together.

I believe this would be good for complicated freight networks with different hubs for different goods types.

I thought a complicated freight network was when all trains carried all kinds of things. Separate trains for different goods is the easy solution.

The main problems with such a goods filter is the granularity. Operating at a level more detailed that category will in some games lead to chaotic behaviour as some lines may carry different goods in either direction. I don't thing the game has easy access to such information, so the line will switch back and forth between filters depending on the current situation.

What do you think a filter that displays only the networks of a particular player?

Would give some order to this disaster.

Filter for only one player, at least the current player, sounds very much like a must. I wasn't aware that the map shows lines for all players, since I only do one-player games.

Press the control key and lines will be colored in the respective player color.

Another non-obvious feature. I also wonder if it helps much in the worst cases, or maybe makes things worse because lines become harder to tell apart.

I fear it looks cool, but isn't that useful once things get complex.

If it could be filter-able, i.e. with a drop down so you could turn lines on/off individually, or display the most over/under-used lines, that might be quite something.

@Ters
@AP
It seems to me
reasonable..
;)

We must find a good solution for this.

Filtering by player and line type is actually quite easy to do:

"patch": https://github.com/lstosik/simutrans/compare . I will probably add freight type filtering soon.

Nice patch, I will surely test it.

You should check your editor, it's saving with another encoding and messing stuff, like Hansjörg name.

It looks great, but as says An_dz... needs to be cleaned a little the patch.  ;)

What about filtering by traffic flow? So it could show the network e.g. on a colour gradient black-to-white, depending how busy it is. Or be inverted, to bring the routes with spare capacity into focus instead.

I don't think there is currently any good way to measure how busy a line is. I tried to use load level factor: (http://i.imgur.com/fWlFthd.png)

but it doesn't really provide any useful information unless there are at least 4-5 vehicles assigned to every line.

Thanks, after some tweaking incorporated in 7118. Impressive 2nd post.

Excuse me
It would be possible to show the "names-player" with the specific color the player ?.. :P

Yes, names in their color is possible after the renovation of the lists.

Actually, also good could get their color ...

I always I recognize the player by color rather than by name... ;)

Seems natural, as the color is everywhere (especially when the pak set uses player coloring properly), while the name is almost nowhere.

Another thing I've noticed is that the mouse wheel does not respond to the scroll bar of the filters, the same happens with the arrow keys up and down.
