Title: Going down in to the ground, down in the underground!
Post by: FLN on February 15, 2025, 05:30:04 AM
Who likes to build subway lines and other routes in the underground?

Me, in the latest maps played, discovered the joy of building underground  :)
I especially love to create powerful railways and will never get bored of organizing efficient subterranean stations and crossings.

What I wanted to find out here is, who else does extensively build underground?

Building in the ground comes with it's own set of challenges and I would like to improve my skills by learning how you address them.

For instance, I'm currently working on this 'generic' high-speed intersection. And I'm sure, others of you have already done similar work.

I'd like to know and to see, what solutions you came up with for rail-crossings and other problems in general. Please share  :D

You should also be able to activate the underground mode in Simutrans (altho that depends on the exact configured shortkeys you or the pakset has set it) is usually `shift + u` instead of `ctrl + u` for height cut mode. I'll try later today to show you some of my own underground infra, maybe not as extensive as some of others here maybe you'd still like it  ;)

I think it makes sense to have north-south connections and east-west connections on different layers to begin with. That way, when you need an intersection, both can go without a level change, and the diagonals only need one level change each. Being underground gives you the freedom to do that, while above ground you'd tend to use elevations more sparsely.

Hi Danivenk, I'm curios to see your work

That's a very good point Leartin, thank you  :)

Here are some underground infra I have made:

Some highway interchange under some cities which already have a lot of railways or are on an island

There's also of course some highway exits

As well as metro lines but that is usual mostly

Thank you very much for sharing your screenshots  :)
That's some impressive infrastructure right there. I admire especially the highway intersections, very beautiful!
I obviously can see the similaritys between highway and railroad intersections-structures, which are inspiring for my underground railroad network.

What you got to remember is that for rail vs roads the purpose of them is different. Roads usually are made to allow for going to any direction on the JCT. Meanwhile railways are usually only made where necessary. The more trains on it, usually, the more streamlined the tracks are. At least in my experience.
