The reason for this labelling is the varying volume of mail.
green = res
yellow = com
red = ind

Looks awesome, although with my eyesight - red blends into the background, and it's not easy for me to distinguish green and yellow.
It's certainly possible to color the entire graphic, or even use different graphics.
If I'm the only one it bothers, then it's just me, and fine as-is, for sure :)

Question out of question for the point of the act, since construction speed is fast enough to bother players regarding what type of construction is bound to be constructed. It might have its use if construction speed gets varied though, and long enough for players to notice
But **** this exact type of marking but different is a MUST in Simutrans Extended. In Simutrans Extended we have buildings built in a city, but the catch is that some of them are INDUSTRIES THAT LOOK LIKE AVERAGE RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS

Incorporated in r11768, thank you. pak64 has a man (res), a dollar (com) and a cogwheel in an orange background for those. Very few industrial buildings as usual, missing higher levels in pak64 and pak128
