Title: Ports bug
Post by: idan44 on March 04, 2010, 08:05:21 PM
Hello,  ;D

I have found a bug in the ports at Simutrans. You can build the port on any slided cliff including the earth, mountains etc... And not only the sea and shores.
I don't know if you have already fixed that because that I am using a pretty old version of Simutrans

Idan.  ;)

Welcome to the forum Idan!

Well, seems like you are answering your own question.  Usually, if you have a bug and are not running an old version of Simutrans, we will tell you to upgrade.

It also helps if you write which version you are using when submitting a bug report.

It's in the latest version.  Actually I don't think it does any harm, for instance AP has used it to good effect in the pak128.Britain demo game on land tiles...

Actually, I suspect this is more a pakset bug than a Simutrans engine bug. I mean, as far as I remember, this doesn't happen at the latest pak64 version with simutrans 102.2.1

I can confirm this bug in 102.2.1 too.
If size of harbor is 1x1, I can build it on any slope.

Tested with pak64 and pak64.german.

The question is: Is this intended? Or should this be fixed? Maybe allowing 1x1 ports next to a river?

I'd definitely argue for allowing it to stay, whether intended or not by the developers.  Some people use this as a feature already, and besides, if you don't want to build a port on a hill way up in the mountains, don't.  It's not like you have to do it.

I love little oddities like this...

How are people using it? Are they building next to canals, or....?

If it's not a bug, we might consider it as an easter egg.

That's what I did, next to a river actually. The canal dock symbol is just some boxes, so I added a dock with a crane next to it!

I agree. It's not like the computer is placing them randomly or something. It's a useful feature, and at worst does no harm.

That's very cool! I hope that sneaky feature stays. :D

Of course, I miss being able to lower ocean tiles, even if we do have a good underground now :)

Lower ocean tiles should work, imho.

And forcing a harbour next to water or river if size is (1x1) might be not to difficult.

Oh, I meant the old trick of using slope tools to create land under the ocean level - the thing that was taken out specifically a while back.

I seem to recall there were problems with it; and ultimately, I don't even have to understand why things are done, I know they often have to be done; I was just expressing nostalgia for it. :)

.. Then we leave it as it is. Case closed :)

I ran into this today, and it's definitely not nice.

I placed a new dock on a tile and then I expected to be able to run a ship to it. Sadly it looks like it isn't the case, even though it's on a slope next to a river:

Since the river tile is not water, no stop is added there. Otherwise any bus stop with a harbour would be harbour stops.

Technically: No. Its water way on simple ground tiles but not a water tile.

Okay.

Note to self: don't bother taking a towel when you go swimming tomorrow

.....this is how game design works.

You need to use a quay on the river tile itself (Look closely at AP's screenshot above).  You can keep the harbour if you want for visual effect and additional passenger capacity, but without the quay it won't receive boats off the river...
