Title: Drastic drop in income
Post by: Ters on May 17, 2011, 05:10:29 PM
Some time after upgrading from somewhere between revision 4425 and 4432 (inclusive) to revision 4445, I noticed a significant drop in income. It looks like it started when I upgraded and my income has stayed low for three game months. Most, if not all, of it seems to come from my passenger and mail network, primarily the intercity connections, which now suddenly have lots of free capacity. However, freight trains usually wait until they are fully loaded and usually go from one point to another, unlike my very interconnected passenger/mail network.

I don't remember doing any changes that could disturb the network, let alone on such a global scale. As there seems to be routing related changes between those revisions, I have to ask if this could have something to do with this.

This could be due to the changes to the routing system.

Could you upload your savegame?

The effect is most noticable in the train lines in the west and in the north, so the trains at the initial "camera" position in this save game are not prime examples.

I do have a backup of this save game which I took when upgrading simutrans. I can upload that too if necessary.

Can you upload the old savegame as well?

It seems that somehow less passengers are transported. But I did not found anything strange in the passenger statistics (no route passengers).

Afaict there are no critical changes to the routing system between the revisions you mentioned, the big changes happened earlier. I noticed that you do not cover the cities well, maybe that is a reason for the drop too?

The new routing in Standard allows for multiple start halts, does it not? Might it not be that passengers are now choosing a shorter (and therefore cheaper) route to use where they have a choice?

My coverage has not changed, certainly not intentionally to this degree. I does not appear that passenger choose a different route either, because they don't have many choices, and all of them are affected. My hub stations also show few passengers waiting, while some of them used to be very near crowding.

Local lines like buses, trams and urban trains appear relatively unaffected. Some appear to have increased their income slightly, while some show a slight decrease. Those local lines that have experienced a reduced income show a much smoother reduction that preceeds the main drop in the intercity lines, though most of these might be the buses that I recently replaced with bigger, but more expensive ones.

It's almost as if passenger reach the main stations, change their minds and head back home.

should be fixed in r4481. The routing was broken to some extent.

That got the passengers going again. My profit returned to its former level in about two month (not that I need that much money). Thanks.

Well, I played with this bug for almost a game year, and I still didn't manage to lose money.

Ters, I thought that you lose money.
I beg your pardon for misunderstanding.
