Title: lavatories for medium to long distance travels
Post by: ӔO on October 22, 2011, 11:31:33 PM
there is catering and comfort, but should there not be lavatories?

I find that this is what sets apart commuters from regional and express trains and buses.

I generally take the view that the presence or absence of lavatories ought be reflected in the comfort rating: one is, after all, rather uncomfortable if one can't use the lavatory when one needs to do so!

on some trains like long distance trains have toilets on each carriage there few expections - turbostars and electicstars have toilets in first and last carriages (larger toliet in end carriages) so larger toilets - more comfort - smaller toilets - less comfort
on older trains - small toliets are commonly found on all trains
but on shorter distances - the metro or commuter trains don't have toliets on board

I guess I'm interested in how much comfort, generally, do each of the facilities add.

seating
compartment, open
seats with back to windows, seats facing forward and/or backwards, reclining seats
1st, 2nd class (rail)
1st, business, economy class (airplane)

extra services
lavatory
plug door, sliding door
sleeper cars
lounge cars
observation cars
low floor/universal design (tram, bus)
air conditioning, cabin heating

Hmm - it's a matter of research, I think! If you look at how comfort is defined, you will see that it is a certain number as the minimum tolerable comfort for a journey of a particular length of time. So, ask yourself: for any given vehicle, how long could you travel in it without becoming uncomfortable?

for example no lavatries on long distance would be uncomforatable - knowing no where to pee - that occurs in old fashioned slam doors non corrdior carriages the second class had no toilets - only first class had own toilets in each room before first corrdior carraiges was started
on older corrdior carriages - there was toilets on each carriages at each end
on modern trains - the long distance have two types - modern sliding door like this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5o0lCOCebpM&feature=related (sweden)
and also slam door
on ICE trains - there usually two toilets in disabled access carriage - one is slam door and other one is sliding door
