I was able to load and play simutrans extended yesterday without any issues. Today I'm trying to run it the same way and I'm not getting this error:
$ ./simutrans-extended

I have not changed anything since yesterday when it worked other than I changed the theme in game. Please advise.
Are you playing a nightly and have recompiled or downloaded the latest one automatically? I doubt it but if you are it may be a bug on the latest one
I just downloaded the .zip file for the nightly today and I'm still getting the same error when loading the linux client:
~/Downloads/simutrans-ex/simutrans $ ./simutrans-extended

Totally new folder so it does not use anything from previous builds.

Have you tried running the Nightly Updater (https://github.com/MatthewForrester/simutrans-extended/wiki/Nightly-Updater)?
