Title: Lack of freight ships after 1950
Post by: Mariculous on May 24, 2022, 11:30:16 PM
In the year 1950 both, the Thames sailing barge and the Clyde puffer are obsoleted.

From that date on, there is no small to medium sized cargo ship available to serve the islands.
Only those huge ocean cargo ships with 5k or even 20k capacity, which is improfitable and unrealstic just to serve a small island.

For that exact reason I'm taking special care of my good old Brigs from 1700 as well as Thames sailing barges and Clyde puffers.

In 1975, the TT Europe becomes available filling the gap of medium-sized cargo ships at least for food and piecegoods.
From the image, I'd assume it's a typical RoRo carrier, so could load any kind of truck and freight.

Still, there is no option for small amounts of goods.
For that reason, the linked branch (https://github.com/jamespetts/simutrans-pak128.britain/compare/master...simutrans:feature/fill_freight_ship_gaps) introduces the following changes, which are imho a good tradeoff between realism and gameplay:

- Expand the retirement date of the Clyde puffer from 1950 to 1975
- Added freight loads to the "Island" class car Ferry (2 cars or 6 livestock/bulk/oil/long goods or 12 piecegoods/food) (Available from 1972)
- Added the 250 units mail locker to the "Island" class car Ferry (Available from 1973)
- Added further freight types to the TT Europe Class (Available from 1975)
- Added two of the above loads to the "Loch" Class car ferry (Available from 1986)
- Added further freight types to the P&O Super European Class (Available from 1991)
- Added two of the above loads to the "Super Loch" Class car ferry (Available from 2007)

Will PR after some testing

This has now been tested and pull-requested.
Hopefully, we'll be able to ship goods to these poor people on the islandy by small trucks and vans travelling on the local car ferry :)

Potential further shipping options:
- Additional good types for P&O Pride class ferry
- Additional good types for P&O Spirit class ferry
- Additional good types for P&O Super European class mixed ferry
- Additional good types for Sealink MV "Horsa" ferry

Though I won't do it unless explicitly requested

There was an issue in the freight pictograms.
Now fixed and addded the gimp file just in case later changes are required.

The freight holds for the TT European Ferry retire at the same date (1991-09) as the hull.

But that means that the ferries cannot be reconfigured after that date.

Since these are Ro-Ro ferries, that is unrealistic, as they could actually take any pak128.Britain-Ex goods type at any time. Therefore, the retirement date should be removed from these holds.

Good point.
Imho we should remove good hold retirement dates in general.
Any objections?
