Title: Autobahn and planes, was: Re: Double Way
Post by: Matthi205 on July 11, 2009, 07:07:15 AM
Why is the "Autobahn" not usable for planes? in Plovdiv,Bulgaria it is a starting and landing place for JumboJets and lots more.... ;D

Your post had absolutely nothing to do with the original topic, so I've split it off here.

I don't know if the source graphics are available for that, but if so, you could certainly make runway using those graphics...

But,the problem is: connecting with the car Autobahn with out any intersectionisn't possible without significantly programming a lot.I'm not the kind of C-dev.

Well, from a practical standpoint, this is so extremely unlikely to happen...

Even if we assume aircraft landing on roads was a common occurrence, it would so greatly interrupt the gameplay... it's just an unworkable idea, I think I can confidently say.

Also Finland and Sweden use regular forest roads as fighter bases.

And this doesn't fit in with a transportation simulator. :)

Tactical transport planes would fit, and the pak128 already has the C-130 for that. I would see a use with useing it in remote areas where I just have some raw materials and limited road network.

Some concepts work well for Simutrans, and others don't.

Let me give you a good example: Taxis. Taxis don't work well with the simulation engine. Sure, they work great in real life, but this is a simulator and game, rolled up into one; and it was created with certain basic decisions already having been made for good reasons. For example, the tile system, and relative size of cities.

If you think about it -- the bus stops we place in game don't really correspond well to coverage over an entire city. There's two graphic scales going on there...

Well, taxis don't fit into that picture.

In the same way, some of these fringe transportation methods don't fit either.

Also, as far as planes landing on roads -- I'm not sure that's a regular occurrence nearly anywhere... Certainly, the vast majority of countries do NOT allow such a thing on a regular, routine basis. Airports exist all around the world.

If you want to land aircraft in a 'remote' part of your map, build a small airport...

Tactical transport is not currently a part of the Simutrans world... OR at least, it happens transparently to the player.

Please remember that the player, in Simutrans, is in charge of a company that tries to make a profit transporting goods that factories in the Simutrans world already contracted with each other for; as well as passengers/mail in/between cities and factories and tourist places...

Well a few times a year would be regular/routine basis  ::)

Yes I built a hub there now I fly six lines trough it, and it still has lots of potential left. I think its my biggest right now with 32 slots and 6 runways  ::). But a simple road would have  been cheaper  :D

Yes I'm very good at the profit part, the company now makes 20 MCR in profit and total assets are over 320 MCR. I would probably be in better need of better convoy management, to faster upgrade my fleet of planes and trains and cars.

Simutrans deals with what occur on regular basis. Here "regular" means maybe daily or weekly at least. The other fringe transport can be ignored or at least that's not what devs would devote their time and efforts for.

[another part of me]
It would be good if hovercrafts can run both on sea and land.

How about this?

And thus ignoring that this is outside the scope of Simutrans.

If you disagree with the logic of the answer, then I fall back on that. It's outside the scope of Simutrans.

That's not a good enough reason to try and ask for a major overhaul of the Simutrans engine. If you want cheaper runways, play with -freeplay or see if you can gain access to the raw runway graphics so you can compile your own runway pak.

How about letting planes till, for example,1950 land on roads and stop at busstops? :)

I can pretty much tell you it's not gonna happen.

I second Isaacs opinion here. The use is too small to rectify a code change here.

Helipads, and helicopters could be interesting, though. But even that is too far flung I assume.
