this patch should fix two bugs:
-- http://www.simutrans-forum.de/forum/thread.php?postid=42116 (last post), it was possible to connect station tiles with tunnel ways in an illegal way
-- tunnels could be built if a deep hole was in the way, see attached picture

this is a feature and not a bug -> air tunnel

Imho this behaviour is more like a bug than a feature. One can even cross the 'air-tunnel' with a bridge, where the crossing tile is not displayed but a train can cross the bridge, see picture. The bridge has to be built in two parts. Deleting the tunnel removes the bridge, but the pillars stay. I would say weird behaviour.

I'm with Dwachs on this one - that screenshot looks like something from a Wile E. Coyote cartoon...

This is a well-known bug, but it was remained because many people desired to use it as channel tunnel.

Could one not simply tunnel under the sea normally? Especially now that it is possible, with the upcoming underground view patch, to tunnel at multiple levels?

In old version, it was possible to dig under water, this was removed as bug.
Prissi said it will cause way finding error. So, digging under water is impossible in current version

01.png was possible until 99.17.1.
02.png was possible in 88.01.3.

Ahh. It doesn't make a great deal of sense for digging under water to be deliberately prohibited, yet a bug that allows for surreal "air-tunnels" to be left purposely unfixed as a workaround to not being able to dig underwater. Perhaps Simutrans could do with a new waytype: underwater tunnel (more expensive than a normal tunnel, but can go underwater).

Some more sophisticated management of water would be a proper way to allow underwater tunnels... long way to go in such case :(

Or one could forbid such tunnels except in case when there is only water between the two ends? (see picture)

My projects... Tools for messing with Simutrans graphics. Graphic archive - templates and some other stuff for painters. Development logs for most recent information on what is going on. And of course pak128!

Given the rarety such bug (or feature) is reported, I would rather consider this as an easter egg (like the tunnel entrance on a vertical slope, btw. The bridge should test for Boden_t and nothing else though.

EDIT: conditional incorporated, connection to bridges forbidden

Until there's a new way to build an underwater tunnel, the old "bug" should not be removed! Quite a few people still use tunnels in the way VS posted above - as ugly s that may look, but at least it works. So until somebody comes up with a new solution for underwater tunnels, I propose this "bug" should remain active.

Until there's a new way to build an underwater tunnel,(...)

Some years ago (2005), I had proposed an underwater tunnel.

Let me see... aha! Found:

Underwater tunnels are usefull for maglevs, though. :) 8)

I first got this idea from the Astro Boy cartoons... ;) :D

If there is someday the possibility of building slopes in tunnels, you can build underwater tunnels again. And I think, it is possible soon!
