Roads and speeds

I read with interest the topic on speed limit of roads.

Recently I don't make train networks, only busses.  It has a beautiful organic feel.   

I use my own "private rules."  For example, I don't allow myself to modify terrain, instead I use it as it exists.  And I don't allow myself to delete any buildings -- once they are built, I must work with them.  Also, I only allow myself to build dirt roads, not cobblestone or asphalt.  Eventually the suburbs will consume the area and the roads will become asphalt naturally.

Of course I investigate how to reduce congestion.  At large interchanges, I have made my own design to keep intersections separated by at least one tile.  (I want to post an image to the forum, but I failed.)

Then I query the city roads.  The speed limit on cobblestone and asphalt is 50 km/hr.  Shouldn't asphalt be higher?  Next, I delete the road, and re-build it becomes 130 km/hr.  This is strange to me.  Can someone explain to me?

I use pak64, with 112.3.

The road will be slower if it is claimed by the city. You should see sidewalk paving underneath if so.

True to real life, at least where I live, Simutrans limits speed in urban areas to 50 km/h. The way Simutrans does this is a bit odd though. The town has to claim to road as within it's built up area, which only happens when a building is built near the road. When this happens, the road will get a sidewalk. Ownership will also transfer from whoever built the road (typically you) to the town. So may temporarily have an unrealistically high speed road in urban areas.

To have roads with higher speeds through a city, you must, again true to life, separate the road from buildings. This can be done vertically, using elevated roads, bridges or tunnels, or horizontally by leaving a one tile gap. To prevent buildings from getting built in this gap, you must build something else there. You may surround your high speed roads with low speed access roads, metro tracks, power lines or fences (usually available as add-ons, and are usually just some other way type that looks like a fence).
