Hey there,
On stephenson-siemens, good old seahorses still serve destinations on the lake islands with mail in 2015!

That's not due to some inactive player serving these, it's simply least expensive to run that ancient service with all the increased maintainance than running one of those modern mega oceanliners.

I cannot imagine Islands around Britain don't have any mail service these days, although it's hard to find information about how the mail is delivered to the islands.

In Germany, mail is usually delivered by post van, using a car ferry to the island.
Pellworm island mail service as an example (in German language)

In a few cases, mail is still delivered by horse carriages. (in German language) Depending on the season, mail is delivered by a single post man using either the horse carriage or a tractor to serve the 33 inhabitants of Neuwerk through the Wadden Sea on ebb tide. In summer seaon, a touristic steamboat is used instead on high tide.

That was a little background information. We cannot simulate both properly in simutrans, but we should add mail options at least to car ferries, simulating a mail van on that ferry.
Usual ferries might also deserve a smaller capacity mail addon, simulating a post boy on that ferry.

Thank you for pointing this out. I have now added a small mail locker for a number of modern ferries (1949 onwards), which should permit mail to be taken on board these vehicles into the modern era.
