Generic SE Asian pakset?

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this topic, but something I have wished for for a long time is a generic pakset for Southeast Asia. I have pak64.Japan, but of course the other Asian countries are very different from Japan. And anyway, in pak64.Japan the only customer for rice is the sushi restaurant, and Japanese people certainly do not buy their rice only at a sushi restaurant. Is any work being done on the Japan pak?

For SE Asia (and also Japan), rice mills should also supply markets. And for SE Asia, there should be coconut products and cattle farms. I think you can customize the Simutrans landscape so palm trees appear, but I don't know how to do that.

I see in the forum that some artists have been working on Indonesian trains over the years. So it seems like there is a group of Simutrans players who live in SE Asia and might be interested in a SE Asian pakset.

There are many addons on the japanese Wiki:
https://japanese.simutrans.com/index.php?%A5%A2%A5%C9%A5%AA%A5%F3

For instance in 64 size:
Taiwan railroad stock (and Chinese HST down the page): https://japanese.simutrans.com/index.php?%A5%A2%A5%C9%A5%AA%A5%F3%2F%CE%F3%BC%D613
Newer Chinese HST: https://mail.japanese.simutrans.com/index.php?%A5%A2%A5%C9%A5%AA%A5%F3%2F%CE%F3%BC%D619
Korean HST: https://japanese.simutrans.com/index.php?%A5%A2%A5%C9%A5%AA%A5%F3%2F%CE%F3%BC%D69

For pak128 there again
Chinese HST: https://japanese.simutrans.com/index.php?Addon128%2FTrain14
Hongkong commuter trains: https://japanese.simutrans.com/index.php?Addon128%2FTrain12
Chinese DF4 engine: https://japanese.simutrans.com/index.php?Addon128%2FTrain%202

There is an Indonesians addons for pak128: http://simutransindonesia.weebly.com/

The pak64 and pak128 are open and you are free (and actually encouraged) to remix them to something you found suitable. More than 20 years of addons have created quite a pool to draw from.

Thank you very much! I see there are a lot of files available for use.

I did figure out how to install addons for pak128.Japan, but now I get fatal errors when I try to launch pak128.Japan. I notice that someone else had that problem, and the solution was to remove the files from the addon folder and add them back one at a time to see which one causes the fatal error. That will take a long time. I have spent a lot of time yesterday and today working on pak128.Japan, so maybe I will avoid it for a while.

This morning I thought one vehicle that would make a good addition to a generic SE Asia pak is the famous Filipino jeepney. Jeepneys carry 12-18 passengers (and sometimes 1 or 2 more), so that would be a nice vehicle for some addon. I read a tutorial on creating obj files, but unfortunately I have no painting or drawing skill, so I won't be able to create a jeepney. Oh well.

Maybe for practice I can try to find some existing addons and install them in the basic pak128.

It looks like many of the available addons are for trains. I did find and install for pak128.japan a dump truck and a set of busses. The dump truck looks OK, but the busses float above the road.

I will keep trying.

I would like to add bus stops and cargo yards, because there are no images for those in pak128.japan.

Antonin

I keep adding downloaded files to my pak128.Japan addons folder and then getting fatal errors when I try to launch pak128.Japan with addons. Then I delete the files I added, then add just a couple, and get more fatal errors. Just now I added a dump truck addon and the contents of a file called OBK_truck01v2, but now I get the fatal error "cannot resolve GOOD-cat12".

Oh well. I salute the people who have created addons and thank them for their contribution to this wonderful game. I must be doing something wrong, because somehow I am adding them incorrectly.

Combuijs

You are adding them correctly, but not all addons are compatible with every pak.

First of all its size (128 in this case) must be the same. But also every pak has its own set of goods. In your case the add on truck transports good category 12, but pak128.japan does not have that good (you can see an overview of the goods in Simutrans itself, but probably not its codes.). So the dump truck is not compatible with pak128.japan and you cannot use this. If you have the source file (*.dat), you can change the good category of the vehicle and recompile (makeobj) to create an new pak file. Otherwise you never can use this addon.

So you see, it is very difficult to mix add ons that are not specially made for a pak together with that pak.

Just now I deleted everything that I previously put in my addons folder.

Then I clicked on the link that prissi was nice enough to provide above:

https://japanese.simutrans.com/index.php?%A5%A2%A5%C9%A5%AA%A5%F3

From that page I clicked on a link that said:

Addon (pak128.Japan)

From that page I downloaded three train addons:

locoset_medium
JNR_hopper_car_set
JNR_large_coal_hopper_car_set

I unzipped those files and added everything that was in each folder to Documents\Simutrans\Addons\pak128.japan

Then I tried to launch Simutrans with pak128.Japan and addons, but the game would not launch. I got a fatal error message.

Thank you anyway for trying to help.

IF you download the industry JHSDF_factory_202004_pak.zip you need to download also the car carrier ship and cargo car transporting steel. Simutrans should load though.

THere is also a new Japanese addon portal: https://simutrans-portal.128-bit.net/

Antonin

One thing I noticed when I download addons is that some of the downloaded addon folders contain pak files only, while others have sub folders with pak files, DAT files, tab files, png files and text files. I don't know if I should put just the pak files in my documents/simutrans/addons/pak128japan folder, or everything. Unfortunately I cannot read the text files...apparently they are in Japanese.

It is difficult to know what goods the trucks are intended for.

I have compared pak128 to pak128japan to see if I can transfer any bus stops or buildings or vehicles, but pak128 has 90+ pak files, pak128japan has almost 400, and many of the pak128japan pak files have Japanese names. I don't know what, if anything, would work if copied from one pak to another. I read somewhere on the forum recently that files from pak128, pak128 Britain and pak128 Japan can be used in any of those paks, but maybe my understanding is incorrect.

Is there a way to open a pak file? For example, is there a way to open a truck pak to see what good it carries, how fast it travels, when it is introduced, etc.? The same for a factory pak file, to see what goods it uses, what it produces, etc.? I read a tutorial for creating pak files, but how do you edit ones that already exist?

prissi

The dat file (if with sources) contains the info on what is carrying. But pak128 and pak128 vehicles use different alignment, so the do not work together very well.

To use the addon in game, only copy the "*.pak" files into the addon folder. After copy a few, try to start simutrans. If is fails, remove the last copied ones ...

If you start Simutrans with "-log 1 -debug 3" it will print out a lot of info to the vehicle in question. Also newer Simutrans nightlies of pak128 will have the vehicle timeline too to explore all vehicles in the pak without a depot and compare them.

Thank you! I see that I can open dat file by using Notepad. Some of the pak files I have downloaded have dat files, and some do not. They are sometimes confusing, because some of them do not show the name of what the vehicle carries. Instead they show a "category" of goods. It is really difficult to match a factory and a good and a vehicle (especially trucks) to carry those goods. Most of the addons just include vehicles, usually trains, and not the entire industry chain.

I'm sorry, but I do not know how to start Simutrans in this way.

I have been trying to use addons in pak128.japan, but I am still confused. Or, maybe I could instead move some files from pak128.japan to regular pak128.

Thank you for patiently trying to explain things to me.

Regarding the goods, the pak file can only be displayed in an editor.

The product names are not coded. However, it is the object names that are displayed differently in the game due to translations.

vehicle (begin of file)
factory (end of file)

When it comes to vehicles, it should be noted that they transport all goods that belong to the same category as the one defined. The exception is category 0, which is special freight that can only be transported with appropriately defined vehicles.

Hmmm. I apologize, but I'm completely lost.
