How do you organize your cities?

Inspired by this route-naming topic in the forum I wanted to start this similar topic here, which I did not find elsewhere in the forum.
I'm eager to get to learn other systems you guys use, so please tell =)

For addressing the issue I encountered dividing large cities to manageable bits and having to remember all the district names of all the different cities that might evolve during the lifetime of a map, I came up with the following system.

I took a look at the number pad of my keyboard and adapted this 'pattern' to organize cities.

1  2  3
4  5  6
7  8  9

Though I don't make 9 sections out of a regular city (3000-6000 habitants), I make 4...
The city center gets representrd by Nr. 5, usually a intersection next the town hall.
at this intersection also the corners of the 4 sections or districts meet.

These 4 districts I created get named northwest (NW=1), northeast (NW=3), southwest (SW=7) and southeast (SE=9) respectively.

The seams of the districts, where they meet, make up the axis corresponding to north-south and east-west (= 2-8 & 4-6).

This system of numbers I now use to create meaningful and easily repeatable, but yet short route names, like L Lnd 39.

E.g. a local bus line operating in the northeastern district (=3), in the quarter of this district, which is closest to the city center -so the southwestern (=7) corner of this district- gets the line-number 37: '3' for the NE district and '7' for the SW quarter of this district.
The adjacent quarter, within this district, wich is to the east is the southeastern corner (=9) gets serviced by the bus line 39.
The next quarter, to the very north of this quarter, is the northeastern quarter of this district. Northeast being symbolized by Nr. 3, makes bus line 33.

Following this pattern a city line connecting this northeastern district's center with, let's say the southwestern one could then be named: "Cityname 35-75". Or if it also stops a the very city's center (town hall) the line would be named "Cityname 35-5-75".

Or a line simply serving an east-west (or rather west-east) route through the city center would be named 4-5-6

It sure needs some time to internalize this system, but I can tell you, that meanwhile I name new lines in no time and re-find them effortless =)
Furthermore I've got so used to these codes, I even don't use the hyphen '-' symbol no more, to separate the numbers, since the number sequence is always unique within one city.
