How can I build a proper subway?

Hi, I'm new, and I'm starting to get used to Simutrans, but there are a few niggling issues, this being one of them.

First involves subways.

I have overwhelmed my ground transport. My trams and buses are full, and have 100s of people waiting at stops. I don't know how to use the line management  tool, so I thought a Subway would be a better option.

However, I can't build a tunnel under my city. It isn't on a hill, so I can't do it.

Can anyone tell me how to properly construct a working subway system?

EDIT: I forgot to add. This is on Pak 128 on Simutrans 102.0 that I downloaded earlier this week. If this makes a difference.

If the very next level under your city is water, only then the subway is out of question. Find those artificial slopes tools and create an entrance for your underground tracks. The smallest space possible I'm familiar with is two tiles, one holding the depot and the other holding the entrance into the tunnel.

If you got plenty of space, create a v-shaped ditch orthogonally to the tracks you'll be laying. Then build tracks along that "speed bump" with end-of-track lying on the uphill grade. If you're familiar with tunneling hills, you're good to go from here.

Here's a reminder with pictures. http://en.wiki.simutrans.com/index.php/Tunnels

Any stations you create underground will merge into existing surface stations, normal merging rules apply.

Then I would advise to learn it! You can't manage the game very well if you don't. Look for the Simutrans Starter Guide (see http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=1239.0), where everything is explained.
