When the supply stops for incomplete chain?

pak128.

I find it difficult to support a full industry chain with my initial 500k, so I'm now trying to get some profit from incomplete ones.

1) As I observed, if I supply chemicals to a printing press (but no paper), the supply ceases when the press gets all the chemicals it can store. Is my observation correct?

2) If I supply a lot of oil to the refinery, but don't ever take any products (chemicaps, gasoline, plastics), will the refinery stop working after it fills its warehouse? Is my guess correct:
1. The refinery stops working unless there is storage space for at least 1 of the end products.
2. Shortly after, the refinery oil storage is full and the oil fields stop supplying oil to the refinery.

3) I wonder whether there are factories that work on some of its source products (like a cannery which takes meat OR fish as well as steel, not both foods) ?

1) Yes, that is correct. (Unless you disable the "just in time" setting of the game, IIRC.)

2) Also correctly observed/guessed.

3) AFAIK this is currently not possible in simutrans. When a factory is defined to have different inputs, it assumes that all of them are needed to produce (although the "mixtures" may vary). Same is true for output: if the inputs are available, all types of output will be produced (quantity may vary) - if there's a transport connection for it.

If the industry chains were created incompletely (that happens sometimes), you can use the map editor functions (usually available under public services player) to build (and connect!) the missing items. If just your financial situation prevents you from serving a full chain, you might try and go for the simple chains (e.g. coal or oil to powerplants) in the beginning. Also you can disable bankruptcy (="freeplay") or change your starting money.

Thanks for the answers.

I'm aware of the possibilities of 'cheating', but I'd like to beat the game on this settings, since I'm almost sure it is possible :)

Probably you're already aware ...
Incomplete factories still produce passengers (and mail? - I haven't used mail for long long time).
So especially in the early stages of a game where connecting factories can be a problem (incomplete chain, too many factories of the same type, too much distance, etc), a factory located inside a city (Workers live in ...) can still produce revenue and help growth, even when it is inactive cargo-wise.

Actually, I've started a new map recently, and I'm developing a passenger bus transport network. I have a large town with a couple of stops in it, and I also have a number of long-range bus lines to other towns.

The maintenance of the system is quite low, and I'm already generating some revenue. I figure that the revenue grows much faster than linearly with the increase of coverage (since more passengers can actually get to their destination).

Anyway, my initial question is answered and we're going offtopic now :)
