[New Release] Simutrans-Experimental 7.3

A new version of Simutrans-Experimental is available to-day: Simutrans 102.3 Experimental 7.3. See here for more information on how to download, install and set up the latest version. For those already familiar with the installation and setup, here are some quick links:


Simutrans-Experimental 7.3 is an interim release pending the next main release, Simutrans-Experimental 8.0, which will fix the automatic convoy replacer feature (which is disabled in 7.3 and 7.2), enable depots that can only build certain types of vehicles (e.g., steam, diesel, sail, etc.), and improve compatibility with saved games. This version is based on 7.2 with the reported bugs in that version fixed. As with 7.2, There are a number of significant enhancements, mainly related to balancing, in Simutrans-Experimental 7.3 which I wanted to give people the opportunity of trying before the release of version 8.0, which may be some time away due to the complexity of fixing the automatic convoy replacer. See here for a list of the changes from version 7.1 to 7.2. Version 7.3 incorporates all the latest updates from Sumutrans-Standard; there follows a list of the main changes in 7.3:

Changes (Simutrans-Experimental)
  • FIX: Compile errors with GCC (Neroden)
  • FIX: Code error in convoy replacer (still disabled - Neroden)
  • FIX: Crash when deleting factories in some circumstances.
  • CHANGE: loadsave_frame uses new gui_table_t component to list savegames. (Bernd Gabriel)
  • CHANGE: Updated the automatic signal tool (Bernd Gabriel  and Dwachs). Can now click and drag to lay multiple signals. CTRL+click to change settings/spacing.
  • FIX: Loading and saving errors/crashes (Bernd Gabriel)
  • FIX: Copying a convoy added vehicle found in depot to old instead of new convoy. (Bernd Gabriel)
  • CODE: Deprecate the vector implementation of freight and the SLIST_FREIGHT precompiler directive (Neroden)
  • CHANGE: Updated credits
  • CHANGE: The cost of removing buildings is scaled with the scale factor.
  • FIX: Erroneous prices shown for station buildings in the tooltips.
  • FIX: Crash when trying to copy a convoy when credit limit would be exceeded in some cases.
  • CODE: Fix compiler warnings in GCC (Neroden)
  • TEMPORARY: Disable "replace" button until the replacer is fixed, for release of 7.2/3 only

Changes (Simutrans-Standard)
  • FIX: overhead way icon was selected when wayobj-remover was active
  • CODE: consistent values of error in all two_click_werkzeug_t's::is_valid_pos
  • FIX: headqurter building with same size could fail unexpectedly after rotation for AI
  • FIX: no long no trees after 150 years
  • ADD: offset of squares for halts are dependent on tile size
  • FIX: crashes when extending world and river do not find a way to the sea
  • CHANGE: (neroden) fix some uint16/32 stuff in brueckenbauer
  • ADD: no decimal point for very large amounts
  • CHANGE: better displaying algorithm, should give much less clipping errors/graphics glitches with long vehicles/bridges/stations etc.

Feedback and testing

Thanks to all those who have tested Simutrans-Experimental and provided useful feedback, and apologies for those who tried version 7.2 and were frustrated by the crash bugs; your patience is much appreciated.

As to feedback, it would be particularly useful to have feedback on the updates from 7.2 (shown in teal in this post) to Bernd Gabriel's new physics model (discussion in this thread, please): Bernd has put an enormous amount of effort into this (I am extremely grateful to him for his very great patience with all of the e-mails that I sent him asking for various revisions to the code), and it would be extremely useful to have some detailed feedback to enable the system to be fine tuned. I should also be particularly grateful for feedback on the new balancing changes (shown in maroon in this post).

Any other feedback from this version would, as ever, also be very much appreciated, including (1) bug reports; (2) information as to how well-balanced that the game is; (3) any difference in approach/strategy needed for Simutrans-Experimental as over Simutrans-Standard; and (4) any other useful feedback.
