[New release] Simutrans-Experimental 9.2

A new version of Simutrans-Experimental is available to-day: Simutrans 102.3 Experimental 9.2. See here for more information on how to download, install and set up the latest version. For those already familiar with the installation and setup, here are some quick links:

Makeobj has not been updated for this version. Simutrans-Experimental 9.2 is a bugfix release, containing fixes for a number of reported problems, and includes all the latest fixes and enhancements from Standard. The principal issues that are addressed are (1) multiplayer online mode; and (2) instability in 64-bit Linux.

As to online play, Knightly has very kindly made his centralised pathfinding system compatible with playing online, which means that Simutrans-Experimental now (more or less) works over a network. It has not been tested thoroughly, however, and that testing that has been done has revealed that it is still not fully stable online yet, but it works well enough to commence more widespread testing now at least. Particular thanks on this occasion to Knightly for his hard work in relation to the pathfinding system and online mode, and to Sdog, Turfit, Prissi and Ters for their work on the 64-bit issue (which turned out to affect Standard, too, but was more noticeable on Experimental because of the default compile settings for the 64-bit Linux binary in Experimental).

Here is a list of the changes:

  • CHANGE: Better fix for electricity consumption related crashes.
  • CHANGE: Passengers will now use their private car to alternative destinations if they cannot reach their primary destination by private car.
  • CHANGE: Sound playing time offset for vehicles now uses asynchronous random number generator.
  • FIX: Crashes when compiled with GCC 4.3 and above. (Now integrated with the fix from Standard by Prissi)
  • REVERT: "CHANGE: The centralised path searching system is now automatically disabled in network mode." (Knightly)
  • FIX: Network: Synchronising centralised search (Knightly)
  • CHANGE:  Network: Toggling route search mechanism no longer allowed in network mode (Knightly)

Feedback and testing

Thanks also to all those who have tested Simutrans-Experimental and provided useful feedback: it is very much appreciated. Any feedback from this version would, as ever, also be very much appreciated, including (1) online play; (2) general bug reports; (3) information as to how well-balanced that the game is; (4) any difference in approach/strategy needed for Simutrans-Experimental as over Simutrans-Standard; and (5) any other useful feedback.
