Airplanes mess up their landing

When airplanes have circled once waiting for a free runway, they slow down and start descending whether the runway is free or not. They soon realize their mistake and resume circling at full speed, but they are now lower. Once the runway becomes free, they resume landing as normal, but as they are now lower, they reach ground level one tile before the runway. This does not look good.

It appears this has been mentioned a few times on the Help board, but as those posts are getting old and don't seem to have become proper bug reports, I take my chance at reporting it again.

The bug still appears in revision 4707, which includes some recent airplane related fixes. My runways are east-west, in case that matters.

This should be fixed with revision 4711.

Thank you for the report. The hint that this happens after circling was useful indeed. The airplanes did have one tile doubled in their route, which causes an off-by-one error after circling... I always thought the touchdown error happened due to rough terrain.

I also though terrain played a key role, but this time my airports had no slopes near them.

However I do think there might be a bug with airplanes and terrain. Sometimes I clearly see them ascend or descend when passing over a slope, but other times they don't. I have a theory that corner slopes might be a problem. Recently, a plane was flying through the streets of one of my cities at what looked like a single level above ground. And the city street was just two levels above sea.
