Today I noticed something strange - that ships Edmund Fitzgerald have steam engine. It seems quite strange - when their intro year is 1958. And it is strange mostly in comparison with else ships, for example Patagonia, that have earlier intro year and have diesel engine.

I know (or at least I think it) that engine type in case oif ships is quite irrelevant but it is very strange.

The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was a Great Lakes freighter originally build with coal-fired boilers, thus the steam engine (see here). Later on, in 1972 her boilers were refitted to burn oil instead.
The strange thing about the engines and dates could be because of the different ship types; maybe the ships at Great Lakes had some differences with the ships built to sail thru the oceans.
