Scotrail HST and Greater Anglia Class 755, anyone?The middle power car of the 755 is unique among the vehicles in this set.

During the recent downtime, I've taken the opportunity to create a VTEC/LNER/EMR red (the livery is the same for all three) HST.

I'd recommend using GIMP or similar software. Start with existing png source files and you'll gradually get used to editing them. Key functions to get used to include opacity - when you're painting pixels you won't always want to use 100% opacity but rather a lower level in order to help with gradients, etc.
You can use the 'fuzzy select' or 'select by color' tools to select an area of a particular colour. Then you can fill it in a different colour, or use Colors>Colorize.
