does anyone else get this?

occasionally, when I close a page that was playing back flash video in firefox, while playing simutrans, the system will completely lock up.

I haven't tested this with chrome or IE, so I'm not sure if it's an issue with how flash is handled in firefox (plugin-container.exe) or if it's a problem with simutrans.

I've gotten this with both older and newer video drivers and flash players.

currently, I'm using this:

using winXP-32bit
AMD HD5770, cat 12.1
adobe flash 11.1.102.63

there hasn't really been any pattern to which sites cause this.

I'd say neither Simutrans, browser or Flash is to blame, as they should not affect anything but themselves. If two different user space applications manage to interfere with eachother and/or completely lock up the entire computer, then the operating system, a driver or some hardware is faulty (in theory). The application(s) just trigger the fault, and that could be with a perfectly normal and legal operation.

i say it sounds like the videocard overheatin, i'd open the pc and check for the videocard fans being ok, and cleaning them. and clean the rest(cpu, motherboard,psu and chassis) won't hurt either.
They sell compressed air cans to do this con computer stores. you can use a. brush for this if you want it cheaper, but be sure to ground yourself and the computer from static or you can damage the computrer (touch the pc case on one hand, and put bare foot on ground, for example)

I doubt it's overheating, because temps never go above 46C for the video card and it wouldn't make sense that the system freezes when the video is closed. Normally, you would start to get some graphical artifacts before a complete freeze if the videocard is overheating. The system is not overclocked either, so it's really strange to me there is instability while using GPU intensive programs.

It could be faulty drivers or hardware. I find it interesting that it only happens with flash playback and simutrans together. Normally, when flash crashes in firefox, it just results in firefox or plugin-container.exe restarting. I thought there might be some conflict with resource handling for 2D, but I haven't ever had my computer freeze from DXVA playback while playing simutrans either, so it's really puzzling to me.

 Yea, it might be faulty VRAM too. Since you said you already updated to last versions of drivers, it whould be strange if the problem was in software.

And even if it's only using 2D primitives, the GPU still works, maybe from the video playback the GPU sends PCIe/AGP commands to the memory and the problem is in the motherboard? Who knows, in case of doubt and with udated drivers, I'd discard software problems.

But it's just my personal oppinion. Freezes->hardware problems most of the times.
