First let me say, I've play TTD and OTTD a lot, so not a complete newbie. It seems I have tried everything imaginable and I cannot get ore from an iron mine. Is there a trick I don't know?

What vehicle type (train, truck or ship) are you using to try and pick up the ore?

Modify:  Regardless of type, make sure it is capable of carrying bulk goods.  Then click on the mine and see if it is connected to the station.  Finally, check to make sure the mine is connected to the steel mill you are planning on carrying the ore to.

If the trip to the steel mill has more than one connection, that is, something like picking the ore up by truck, carrying it to another station and then picking it up by ship to the final destination, make sure the ship has been started.  That is, make sure it is on the route.

Roads, a bit incomplete question.

Jason,
1. look if both stations are capable to accept cargo (brown pile in dialogue of station - in column of capacity)
2. look if you have right cars (in dialogue of iron mine you have written type of goods - cars have to be set for this type of goods too)
3. look if factory where do you want to transport iron ore, have contract with this iron mine (look to lines of Suppliers of target factory - or lines of Consumer of iron mine)

Oh, message number 2600

The first thing to check, as mentioned, is to see whether the iron mine and end user factory are connected as supplier/consumer.

Here's a picture to assist:

The iron mine is connected to the steel meel at the top right as a supplier but not connected to the one at bottom right.

If they are connected, check the next steps that Roads and Vaclav mentioned.  If it's still not working, we'll help figure it out for you :)

If they aren't connected, you can either redesign your network to connect the correct supplier/consumer or you can switch to the public player and connect them yourself:

Switch players with the P+ until it says Public Service at the bottom of your screen, then click the connect factory button, click on the iron mine and then click on the destination factory.

You need to supply both iron ore and coal.

If you are using more than one line to connect the two factories, you have to be sure that all the lines involved are active and have the right kind of vehicles, otherwise it won't work. Use waiting and loading settings to avoid empty trips.

I made the same error the first time I played: I built some feeder lines between the mines and a general cargo hub, then a freight main line to a second hub, and then some distribution lines to the consumer factories. I wanted to wait for the goods to arrive to the second hub before starting the distribution services, but without them the game couldn't find a connections between the factories, so the mines didn't start producing goods.
