Hi

I had a few minutes of relaxation time this evening so I thought I'd give the latest experimental a tryout with the latest Pak128.Britain. I installed same on my SuSE 11.1 box and fired her up. After creating a new map (768x512) and starting the game I found it to be unplayable mainly due to erratic or no response to mouse clicks.

One example: I opened the map and tried to resize by dragging the corner. Map wouldn't resize at all. I closed the map and opened it again, this time it did resize; but when I tried to close the map it closed and the reappeared an instant later. Every time I would close the map (by click on the X) it would reappear again. Clicking on buildings with the magnifying glass largely did nothing though sometimes a property window would appear. Pressing escape to close windows did nothing.

Another thing I noticed was that Simutrans was using 62% CPU. The previous Simutrans 102 I ran was only using 25% CPU. Perhaps this is related?

What else can I tell you? I'm running on an AMD Athlon processor. If you need specific library versions from the SuSE install let me know which ones and I'll go look them up.

BTW I think the experimental branch is a great idea and looks to have some great features in it. Keep up the good work guys.

Regards

David

David,

thank you for your report. I am not sure why you are having the problems that you are. Is Simutrans-Standard on the same sized map responsive for you?

Hi James

The map I was playing in Simutrans 102 was 896x640 and was very responsive. That map I'd played right from 1930 to 2008 with no problem.

Can you load the map from Simutrans-Standard into Simutrans-Experimental and see how responsive that it is?

Tried that and the results were the same; map kept reappearing, couldn't drag the playing area after right clicking on it. Eventually I did manage to close the map with Escape. However when I then clicked on the map icon to open the map again it would appear and then disappear again in a fraction of a second.

That's very odd. Can you upload that saved game so that I can try to narrow down the issue? Also, is your platform 32-bit or 64-bit? And, if 64-bit, are you using the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Simutrans-Experimental?

May I also ask - has anyone else had problems with Linux using Simutrans-Experimental?

Using OpenSuse 11.1 as well, GNOME on my rather small laptop, I can run Simutrans Exp fine and smoothly with Pak128.BritainExp .

So, unfortunately, it may be something with your computer :(

It's an AMD Athlon x64 processor; but it's running 32bit SuSE and 32bit Simutrans. Maybe that's where the problem is? The SuSE works fine though.

jamespetts

Hmm, an AMD x64-bit processor running a 32-bit operating system and 32-bit software should run fine. Have you tried using the -nomidi switch at the command line? Some people report that that can solve idiosyncratic performance problems on Linux.

Tried nomidi - didn't fix it.

One things I have noticed though. If I run up the game and hit a key on the keyboard Simutrans behaves as if I was holding the key down. I pressed S to save the game, the save dialog appears with lots of Ss scrolling across the name entry field. I think this must be why, after pressing Esc to close the map, if I try to open the map again it simply disappears immediately. Same thing happens with any dialog box, not just the map. Have tried it with other paks - same problem.

So maybe it's a problem with my keyboard drivers?

jamespetts

That's very odd behaviour with the keys. Can you reproduce that in Simutrans-Standard?

Can't reproduce that in Simutrans standard. Simutrans standard behaves exactly as you would expect with no 'funny' quirks at all.

jamespetts

That's very odd. Might I ask - has anyone else had this problem with Simutrans-Experimental on the Linux platform?
