Sorry for delay in reply:
What was the game engine version - standard or experimental - and pak set/version used to generate the SR 1750 v2 file?
current latest Simutrans standard v102.2.1 - the clue is in the savefile name ;)
current latest Pak-GB (v1.6)

Its 8 Meg sizes is very interesting ...
I notice that the other conversation has since developed somewhat, but re this map; I deliberately made it start off 'bald', adding only minimal trees, on advice given by Prissi and Dwachs here.
- Glad you like it, as a test piece it seems to be serving a useful function!

personally, I can't run that sort of map size and like to keep the sizes below 1.2gb, or basically a size that fits within the half my computer's memory.
How are you calculating the 1.2Gb? Just by observation of realtime memory usage? I mean, is there a way of working backwards from an amount of RAM available, to give a 'maximum reasonable' map size? Or is it just a trial an error thing? Because it appears RAM usage and savefile size do not necessarily correlate. And whilst big maps are interesting, playable maps are more useful!

@AP
when you make the map when creating a new game, the (size) it gives is pretty close to the amount of memory simutrans consumes. Of course adding more objects on the map while playing adds more on that value.

4096x3200 is around 1150MB
3800x5680 is around 1900MB

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but these links are dead now. Does anyone know if those files can still be found?

On Simutrans Maps you won't however find the UK maps mentioned in this thread. They were very large, but not really good. As far as I remember they had some coastal issues. As we had already some excellent British maps, I decided not to publish them.

I still have these files though, so if you are really interested in them and your mailbox is big enough (400Kb to 9Mb) I could send them to you. And if more people are interested I could of course publish them on Simutrans Maps.

Could you do that please? I'm curious if nothing else. Gmail has a decent storage capacity....

I need to redo the maps eventually.
lots of errors in the topography that can use fixes.

One thing I wanted to do with the map was rotate it so that the map could be smaller with less wasted ocean space.

I tried opening the massive map with Simutrans Experimental. Simutrans Experimental didn't appreciate my attempting this, and gave me some error message containing the word "xmalloc".

I think you should post this on the Experimental boards, for example http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?board=53.0. They will also appreciate the initial settings you started the game with and the exact error message.

I seem to have misplaced the source files.
